A new report takes a closer look at the continued dramtic erosion of local beaches in San Clemente.
The study by Moffatt & Nichol, a firm hired by the city to study beach erosion issues, aims to figure out possible solutions to stop the dramatic sand erosion. The four critical erosion hotspots discovered during the study include Shorecliffs, Mariposa Beach, Capistrano Shores and Cypress Shores.
KTLA's Chip Yost reports on July 14, 2023.

Littoral drift in Southern California washes the sand into the ocean with the North Swell in winter and then Summer South Swell washes it back. Every time they screw up the coast with a marina or a jetty or a river mouth "improvement" it interrupts the cycle and prevents the sand from returning naturally .

sea rise even by inches and increase storm strength from the warming planet, no matter the reason, would doom the coastal development hundreds of feet inland over the next generation, even if there was not beach constructions. Sad to say, but true. The best to be done now is intervene and work to mitigate issues it causes. Not talking about a few beach houses, the coastal area a dozen miles in is PACKED with interstates as close as 100 ft to high tide and 100,000's of units of housing. One might say, heh, instead of spending billions to armore 1/2 the shore and pump sand to other areas then depleted, just condemn everything for hundreds of feed inland, rip it down, up, dispose of materials safely, thouands of tons of haz mats, redo ports, sewer plants, condeming 10,000's of houses and biz inland to move them to along with stretches of 8 lane interstae and rail lines, then build 10,000's of new housing uints on land seized from others even further inland to move people you evicted to. And pass the problem on to grandchildren or great grand children. Or acknowledge the over population and poor choices made for greed of a few, stabilize it, legislate to stop it, reverse it, mitigate it.

Erosion like that will never stop, and anything done to "fix" the problem will only shift the erosion to a different area. Those that bought property so close to the ocean should have expected this to occur, and those that still own similar property should understand that they could be in the same situation at any time.

If sea levels are rising, whatever you do won't work. It's not that the beaches are disappearing, they're just moving to higher ground/further inland.

Look at pictures of beach properties and coastal buildings from 50 years ago. The water has not risen to the point it is erasing beaches. Do some independant research and you can see this.

@roachtoasties The sea is rising? Says who? Please tell me, if the seas are rising, why are there cranes all along the Florida coast building high rise condos and offices? Are you dumb enough to think banks would invest billions if they had even the remote possibility their building would be under water? Wake up.

Notice that the real worry is for human interests - not the natural cycles and health of the earth? Also if you take your pictures at plus high tides or even king tides you can skew the images. Take the same pictures at minus low tides and the beaches are huge. Building on unstable soil that near the dynamic cycles of the ocean and the only thing you can say is you've been extremely lucky it's taken this long to impact you. In the 50's and 60's the PCH was closed between Santa Monica and Malibu nearly every winter due to landslides. But hey go sign on with billie gates and start blocking out the sun's rays hitting the earth. Now that's a great idea! (LOL). Or better yet learn to observe, adjust and respect the natural powers of our earth - we are temporary but it's been here a very long time!

Maybe they should lay off the cloud seeding, making it rain in a place that usually doesn't see much rain is definitely speeding up the erosion.

So sad to see this; we used to spend our vacations at San Clemente when I was young and I love it there. Hopefully, they'll come up with a solution so everyone that is living right there, won't be flooded out or have their houses fall down the cliffs. (from Sandi)

I have been watching those beaches disappear since I was a kid. In another two or three decades all those homes west of the I-5 will be condemned and the cliff front homes would have long since crumbled into the sea by then. Mother nature doesn't pause time for us especially when we help hasten the next inter-glacial maximum we are headed full steam into.

Really? China and Japan are suffering from negative birth rates. China even increased their number of children policy to combat low birth rates. Elon Musk claims the biggest threat to overall humanity is the declining birth rates. Perhaps you’re looking through the sanctuary city lense and seeing all the anchor babies being born here in So Cal and every where else that makes you think it’s an over population problem. You probably support post birth abortion too.

There was sympathy for this plight….two or three decades ago. After a while it starts to become pathetic.😐 The solution is obvious. DO NOT build anything anymore along the Coastline. Move away from the Coast. ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨ ☝🏾But wait! Homes in California have been sliding off the Cliffs for over a decade now. There is a huge amount of footage that we can see with our eyes showing Cliff collapses. Why would they continue to build homes along those Coastal Cliffs?🤔 Coastal Cliffs composed of SANDstone and Shale mainly. Just say “Managed Retreat” to Californians and observe the reactions.
