I was too young to witness any of the Padres success, I was born in 01 so I didn't get to see Tony Gwynn play in person, my earliest memories of baseball were watching Peavy start followed by the iconic hells bells and Hoffman closing. I was too young to understand the playoff hype in the mid 2000's so these past few years have been amazing as a lifelong Padres fan. I'm excited to see what the future holds.

I'm excited for you too, they're on the cusp of doing great things! Luckily you haven't missed a whole lot to this point...hopefully you'll get to see the Padre glory days just ahead

I miss Tony Gwynn. I can envision an alternate universe where, if he had lived, he would have been out teaching people how to beat the shift, which would have changed so many things from our timeline.

Oh man, I could not agree with you more. I actually got just a tad emotional earlier this week putting this video together and going through pictures of Tony Gwynn at the end, shared some videos of him with Nina and told her all about him! I think I may have enjoyed the last 20 years of baseball in that alternate universe more...

Re: Nate Colbert - he did pronounce it KOHL-bert, not kohl-BAIR. One of the most underrated sluggers in history. Dude hit a TON, but played on some woeful Padres teams. Hit hit 5 homers in one day in a doubleheader vs the Braves. He hurt his back, and was never the same. But that man had ridiculous power.

I love the story (dunno if this is true) that Dave Winfield is only in a Padres cap in the HOF because of how horribly George Steinbrenner treated Winfield while Dave was a Yankee.
@brutusonbaseball
@brutusonbaseball Жыл бұрын
This is a great story, but from some interviews I've ready, it's not that accurate of a story. My understanding is that by the time Winfield was elected, he and Steinbrenner had pretty much buried the hatchet. Winfield has said he picked the Padres because they were the first to draft him and teach him the ropes and he was grateful for that. Winfield was also elected just after Boggs had signed with the Devil Rays and his contract included a clause that he would wear a D-Rays hat on his plaque when elected. The Hall put its foot down on that...and made it clear to Steinbrenner with Winfield's election that there would be no "buying" of caps for the Hall of Fame!

Ray Kroc wasn't the founder of McDonald's. However, after he bought out the McDonald brothers he began the franchising that made it what it is today.

Tony Gwynn was the best player in my generation to play with one team in his entire career.
@brutusonbaseball
@brutusonbaseball 6 ай бұрын
He was a good one, and there's not many players that stay with one team their whole careers. From this Era I think Mike Schmidt, George Brett and Robin Yount could challenge Gwynn, but they all started in the 70s so I guess they are fun a slightly different era

It's weird that you didn't mention Bruce Bochy. Or maybe it isn't.
@brutusonbaseball
@brutusonbaseball 3 ай бұрын
Is it? Thinking back to all the team history videos I've done, I don't think I've mentioned managers very often. They just don't usually stay very often or get associated with one team to make it obvious...maybe Bochy when I do the Giants history? I can only think of Earl Weaver right now where I've mentioned much about a manager

@@brutusonbaseball Bruce Bochy was a catcher for the Pad's in '84. He was manager in '98. He then won championships in San Francisco and Texas. My point is, "what could've been."

They've certainly had a tough time with supporting sports teams. The Padres have had a fairly good run lately...but it certainly wasn't that way for the first handful of decades they had a team! I guess there's just too much sun and waves to pay enough attention to sports teams.
