I'm following video trip with Trolley map on another computer. Green Line is serious business. I thought there would mostly street running but the right-of -way is superbly engineered with bridges, viaducts, tunnels, overpasses and underpasses for fast running. Welded rail on concrete ties and slabs is Class 1. Tracks look like they were built over old rail lines because I spotted freight cars on warehouse sidings. I just left the tunnel at SDSU so I expect more interference as trolley closes in on downtown San Diego. Thanks for letting me tag along on a ride I've wanted to take for many years.

when I first visited San Diego in 2006 I rode the green line out to Santee and the 52 freeway over cuyamaca street in Santee didn't exist yet. I thought the end of the line was a great example to follow in bringing mass transit to suburban areas!

@BrentNguyen4610 жыл бұрын
SparkDalmatian Thanks ! I don't believe those freight cars seen on the line are in service or receive any service. Those freight cars seen in the video are literally more than 16 miles from the nearest freight mainline. Plus, the grades on the Green Line are extremely difficult for most diesel Locomotives.
@JLJ06110 жыл бұрын
***** I would agree along with the tight curvature of the line, but I still can't help but think those freight cars had to have gotten there somehow!
@BrentNguyen4610 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know right ! It would be very strange to see a trolley pulling one of those !
@brandonelam42849 жыл бұрын
I remember riding on this line back when the Santee extension first opened and seeing those same freight cars. At night there are freight trains that do operate on some of the trolleys rail lines.
@michael.carrot9 жыл бұрын
***** Actually, I know that freight trains do run through La Mesa (one stop on the orange line before merging with the green at Grossmont TC) at night. I live in the area and often hear the train, and I've even seen it a couple of times. They're rare, and I don't know exactly where they go, but it exists

How much does it cost to ride from Old Town to Down Town San Diego? I plan on arriving there next week and from previous experiences downtown parking was horrendous but heard you can park in old town and then catch this trolley.

It costs $2.50 for a one way fare on the San Diego Trolley, regardless of distance for that one way trip.

Null $5 all day round trips with compass card or day card for Adults, bus rides also included. A couple of years back when I was there. Check with MTS website if it's same or changed.

Freight trains use trolley tracks?
@BrentNguyen465 жыл бұрын
Sam Jennings Yep. The San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad shares the tracks along part of the Orange Line where they service a few industries in El Cajon and switch cars to/from the San Diego Yard. They usually operate at night when the trolley is not active.

Do you think there should be a red line for the SD trolley
@BrentNguyen466 жыл бұрын
Amtrak's biggest fan Personally, I would not support the idea for a red line. Most transit agencies tend to avoid naming lines similar to the color of their equipment since it can cause confusion for riders not fond of the system or believe that there are different colored trains for each line. Hence the reason the San Diego Trolley names all their lines colors that are not red.

With wood ties and low platforms, the San Diego LRT system has significantly lower engineering standards than Los Angeles. The Green Line from Old Town to Grossmont has the most viaducts, and the only subway section in San Diego.

does it run 24 hours? where does it exactly take you? downtown to?
@BrentNguyen468 жыл бұрын
The trolley doesn't necessarily run 24 hours, but they operate quite frequently from very early in the morning until very late at night. There are three trolley lines serving the San Diego metropolitan area, all with direct access into Downtown. Those lines reach out either towards the Santee area or down to the United States - Mexico border. There's a lot more info than I can describe here, but here's a link to San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System for more information. sdmts.com/schedules-real-time-maps-and-routes/trolley
