OMG. I used to live in San Francisco, and I never saw Chinatown this 'dead'. Even the Tuesday 6PM time doesn't explain it - the area would always be hustling until late in the evening. We used to go to some of the restaurants there after attending the opera. I see many closed shops and wonder whether those are 'permanent' or simply closed early due to no foot traffic. This is unbelievable and makes me terribly sad. I so hope that the city can recover...

I also hope that the shops were just closed early due to low foot traffic on a weeknight evening. 😔 Definitely felt odd that it was so desolate in what I’ve heard to be one of the most established Chinatowns in the US. Fingers crossed we see a revival.

It's not as bad as Market Street; especially the Financial District where just about every business and building is closed. It's a ghost town.

I lived in the next county over and I would visit since 1980’s ( have not been there since 2017). Once that fancy restaurant, at the top of the building, closed Chinatown went down hill. Everything is made in China now!

You wrote this was on a Tuesday at around 6pm. It's pretty dead. I think a video of a Saturday afternoon would be a better gauge. You would have all of the lunch crowd going for Dim Sum. Still...it looks very dead compared to a few years ago. At 5:14, on the left you show the Four Seas restaurant. My ex and I would go to lunch with her Grandfather at that restaurant every other Saturday. Jason was the owner and my exes grandfather was known as "Uncle Bill". I later learned he was the leader of the Triad in SF. LOL.

I think you're right that weekends around lunch are usually a little busier. I'll have to revisit and get the full experience!

@@streetview_hd In my experience, the only time in the evenings when Chinatown is super busy, is during Lunar New Year. All of the restaurants are booked for large family dinners. My exes family would book tables for 700-900 people. The rest of the time, especially in the evenings, Chinatown is fairly quiet. Enjoy!

Well still looks better than other parts of the city. They can still set there items out in front of their stores to sell. That's because there is a lack of a certain "element" in Chinatown. They don't have to worry about a group of youths running threw and destroying and stealing everything that's not nailed down.

Dead is an understatement. Thought of all places it would still thrive but of course it relies on tourism and a vibrant center city too . Very depressing but I laugh at coat wearing people in the summer ! Nah it’s really a place of depressing weather too . I am thinking if you live there you must thrive on a mix of existential stress and Stoic philosophy. A rather unique self punishment indeed . Joyless .
