In 1968, San Francisco was offered container equipment. The mayor felt it was a fad, he said ships would be unloaded by hand. And it all moved to Oakland.

⚓️ Thanks Steve 😎 question remains ? How & where to put the container gantries and acres of yard space needed by containers… not to mention truck/trailer access to the area. The geography of the peninsula does not lend any reasonable economic support to container operations. 🌈

Another historic dock is the Alcatraz pier located between Aquatic Park and Fort Mason. It was where employees and their dependents caught the ferry to and from Alcatraz, and where prisoners were transported on the warden's launch. Sadly, the mission-style waiting room at the end of the pier was recently demolished and the pier itself is in poor condition and fenced off.

I worked in a warehouse ten years ago. The story I heard was that the Irish mob ran the SF dock workers union in the 80s. They resisted the containerization of SF docks mid 80s. It was because the mob wasn’t able to get their cut from the goods coming in. What ended up happening was that shipping companies just ended up moving their point of entry from SF to Oakland.

My work in agricultural quarantine (import and export) I had been on several of the old piers. I saw some amazing work in some of them, like the shipment of cotton. It is sad that the city trying to earn more money had chased out much of business by hiking up rents. Oakland has been doing the same thing with the majority of those on the boards being real estate developers. The maritime shipping industry has been chased out of both San Francisco and Oakland.

I'm not sure what a change in political leadership would do to restore San Francisco to its industrial past. A tower block of 2.5 million dollar condominiums isn't going to be replaced by a container port, or a herring cannery. The land is too valuable for redevelopment as an industrial complex. Turning the city from blue to red won't change that. Likewise in any other major city with limited land expansion possibilities.
