San Francisco’s Most Beautiful Tree- The Kentia Palm

Calling all fellow plant nerds!! Go check out the gorgeous Kentia palms I planted at 633 Battery Street in San Francisco. This is a really sexy historic brick building that is now adorned with the sexiest trees that can be grown in Northern California.

The Kentia palm Howea forsteriana received species name "forsteriana" after the naturalist father and son duo who accompanied Captain Cook's second voyage to the Pacific, Johann Reinhold Forster and George Forster. It got nothing to do with these plants growing in a forest.

Ok - love palms and enjoy your videos much. However, I am a stickler for accuracy when it comes to palm info. Your explanation for the specific epithet of this beautiful palm immediately sounded a little wonky. The name is forsteriana , not foresteriana. It is derived from the Forster father and son botanists that accompanied Captain Cook on his 2nd voyage- not because it grows in the forest. Howea belmoreana - the lesser known Howea- grows in the same forest on Lord Howe. Speaking of Lord Howe island, it would very cool if you could locate any Hedyscepe canterburyana in the bay area. This palm grows higher up Mt Gower on the island. It is very cool. Of course, the ultimate would be the discovery of someone growing Lepidorrachis mooreana growing ANYWHERE other than the very top of the same mountain, but the bay area would be one the few places it could be happy ( Although I do think there is one in Ventura? maybe). Lord Howe is Holy Grail territory for me

I got a kentia 6 months ago, got 4 trunks in the nursery pot but I think they're slowly drying out, even though I made sure the soil is kept moist. Any particular issue typical for kentia?

The sycamores would be nice if they didn’t over trim them.
