Hi John, I have watched this video 4 times. The attention to detail, the time and effort you put in to construction is obvious and much appreciated. Especially at the end of the video when you carefully show the completed work. A masterpiece! The music fits perfectly for the video and also the back ground while building the model a nice complete example of the time, patience, commitment required and the gorgeous end result. Thank you.

this is a stunning work of art. All the time, precision work and patience to make ships like this is something alot of people, myself included can't fully appreciate. Also agree with you about never putting ships like this into the water. However, i do believe if someone actually did put it in the water, it will hold the water outside, but with the lack of ballast at the keel it would most likely capsize as the center of gravity would be too high without any counterweight at the keel.
@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind words! You are probably right, without any counterweight it will probably capsize. Another good reason to never put it in water!

John Aliprantis if you don’t mind, I’m planning ahead and the final finish you have on your model is perfect, high shine and properly sealed, could you tell me what product you used or if it was a combination of products? Thanks
@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
@@jasonwilliams3478 No problem Jason. First i used a coat of wood sealer (think of it us undercoat). The number of the wood sealer is 1419 and you also going to need Nitro thinner. Then i used 2 coats of gloss varnish for yachts. The thinner for the varnish is white spirit. I used paintbrush and not an airgun. With the airgun you won't get the amount you need , you will get a very thin coat and also at the corners it will pill up. Another problem with the airgun is that you won't get it on every single surface, only on what you are facing, not underneath. And another problem is that the thinner comes in large amount in the solution (varnish - thinner) you are spraying and you might get damaged varnish in the corners after it dries.

Hi John, great work. I have only built double planked hull kits. This looks single plank hull, is it much harder to build single plank?
@JohnsWoodenShips3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, it's not that hard. Just have to follow some specific rules, like that the bow and stern have different length than the middle, so you have to make the strips thinner. Also to change the way you do the planking from a point and down. If you watch the videos i made for Montanes and Santisima for the planking you will understand it. And the outcome is amazing :)

@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much!!! San Francisco is a beautiful model! I will make a video at the next model i'll make. For now i can only tell how to do it. For the wooden parts you have to use first a coat of wood sealer, then after it's dry you sand it down and you use the paint or the varnish. For all the parts i use 2 coats of varnish or paint except from the masts and yards which i use one. For the metal parts i use paints from Humbrol or Revell. Always 2 coats and before i apply the paint i use some thinner in analogy paint 80%-85% ,thinner 20%-15%. To paint the cannons you have to use some pointed tip toothpicks to lay the cannons on because you wont't be able to hold them from anywhere. After the paint will dry , you will have to use a coat of varnish on every metal part. I use paintbrushes in various sizes, the smallest one is 10/0.

Absolutely beautiful! I particulary like the way you rigged the ship's boat for readiness of deployment -- a very nice touch which I intend to copy! So, you reckon gloss is easier to clean, eh? I was thinking of a matte finish for my build... I'm building my first, Artesania Latina's 1:48 scale plank-on-bulkhead (like yours) model of the HMS Surprise, the frigate from the movie "Master and Commander". The hull is fully planked (whew!) and the lower deck is in place. I've got a loooong way to go, in other words. Really enjoyed the video. You've every right to be proud!

Hi John. My Artesania Bounty arrived today and you were right about things missing. It was missing the written instructions and the color photo instructions. I have sent an email to Artesania but I don't hold much luck they will send them all the way to Australia.

Hi John, just another question. Which manufacturer do you think has the best quality wood etc. Occre or Artesania.
@JohnsWoodenShips3 жыл бұрын
If i could rate Artesania with a 10 i 'd give a 9 in Occre, pretty close but some wood strips of a specific wood type weren't much good. I 'd give every other company though a number from 7 and i would descend.

Hi John, I started building the San Juan ship model. What do you use for varnishing the second and third decks? do you use any color or stain or just a sealer? Thank you

@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! These models are static only. To be able a model to have R/C and use it in water it's different in many ways. The wood strips are of different wood type and have different thickness. Also some models come with the keel made from a type of plastic and you have to lay the wood strips around it. Definitely the use of white glue is out of the question because it dissolves in the water. But if you built a model of this type with the thought of putting it in water then from the moment you start building it ,you have a few changes to make. First of all you won't use any white glue. Second you must not have any gaps between wood strips in the keel. You have to use a lot of wood sealer and also 2 or 3 coats of varnish or even paint to make it water proof. Definitely you have to place some weight at the bottom of the keel to make the model able to float and you don't have to forget to make the necessary space to place the batteries and R/C. I hope i was helpful! :)
