Santa Ana The Making Of

The making of the model ship Santa Ana. The Scale of the model is 1:84 and it belongs at the Elite series of Artesania Latina. The time i needed to make this model was approximately 8 and a half months with hundreds of working hours. The cost was approximately 1200-1300 euros (with the display case). The model alone was 730 euros on 2013. The varnish is gloss by choice because it "brings out" the wood, it's more easy to clean ,you cannot have any white spots and it looks better. You can see this as my trademark! To answer a typical question, yes it will probably float ,but you will never put it in water. The model has been discontinued by Artesania Latina, i believe it was due it's high price. You can find it only in a shop that has stock. Until today this model is the most beautiful and at the same time the most difficult model i ever made.
Artesania has relaunched the model on October 2022 but it is similar to this one, not the same.
The music is the Waltz "Blue Danude" by Johann Strauss. When i uploaded the video i couldn't find a way to insert more music tracks. Now i have found a way ,but to do that i must delete the video and upload it again, this means that i will loose all the views and comments, so i won't do it.
In this video i This Video comes in 1080p.

My grandfather would spend hours in his shop building these beautiful wooden model ships, his best he said was H.M.S. Africa built from plans not a kit. He could work fast but,he took his sweet time putting the Africa aside for other projects..grandpa passed away in 1983,I ended up finishing the Africa,i had not worked on a wood model but, watched him build, with a great deal of advice and help from friends of my grandfather I did it,eight years after he built the ship I did the masts, rigging, boats and the finely molded metal crew figures..H.M.S.Africa,sits in the Seattle maritime museum..scale is 1/72 it's a good size replica. My grandfather gets full credit for the build,my name is for owner/doner only.

When I look at this all I can think about is the real ship, it's great to have a scale model to really see how amazing they were, imagine having to learn what all those ropes do, and the names of the sails, and going up those masts, what a hard life they lived. Thanks for letting us see it.

Thank you very much for your kind words!!! You describe every thought it went through my mind when i was building it. A ship of this type had a crew of around 800 people. It is a same that this one is not among us anymore. I have a dream, i wish someday to be able to visit the HMS Victory who is stationery at Portsmouth UK and see everything in 1:1 scale!!! I wish i'll be able to see the USS Constitution too who is in Boston USA.

"So it would seem." Honestly I prefer the Santisima Trinidad. But that's for personal reasons. And the Santa Ana is indeed quite beautiful. Spanish first rates may not have been the most efficient ships out there but they were some beautiful behemoths. And if you take into account that the reason they were designed that was was because their primary function was as defensive patrols on the relatively populated mediterranean and caribean seas it makes sense that they'd ignore speed and maneuverability in exchange for raw firepower and imposing size. Not many pirates would have the balls to get close to, much less try to attack, a massive 112 cannons floating castle like Santa Ana, much less the 140 cannons biggest-and-most-heavily-armed-ship-of-its-era that was the Santisima Trinidad. Only Horatio (motherloving) Nelson would be crazy enough to try his luck against that! And he did... and won... somehow. Fucking Nelson. He was either insane or a genius. I still don't think anyone knows which for sure. But he did make it work!

Thank you very much for your kind words! It was the most difficult and at the same time most beautiful model i ever made. It has on it 13-14 years of experience in wooden model ships and i had made 10 ships before Santa Ana! The photographs do not show all the greatness of the model! Unfortunately in our days the young ones cannot understand the value of making a model and in my country (Greece) we are very few who can make a model like this...

Your experience shows in your work, I figured - suspected by the 8 1/2 months. time line that you had done this quite a few times. This would have taken me 2 yrs as I do not have a lot of ship kits under my belt, and I strive for perfection, but settle for my best. Unfortunately we here { US } do not see youngsters in the hobby shops very often. They seem to have some device glued to their hand or ear, that also keeps their eyes and full attention glued to it also. Again Thanks for sharing your work on the net for all to see. Well done!

Hi Oliver, i've just send you the photos. If you need any help just let me know. My kit wasn't complete. It was missing several hooks , some wood (i manage to cover those from spare parts form previous models)and it was missing the metal cover for the bell. It took Artesania some Facebook bad comments (they erased them) and a few mails to send it to me after 3 months!!! Also you won't find a single picture in the manual to tell you where to put the 2 "toilets". When you get there let me know.

When a model costs 500 euros or more to buy it and you need 6-8 months or a year to finish it, you cannot sell it for peanuts. People think that with 500 or 1000 euros can buy it, believe me for 1000 euros i will set it on fire before i sell it :)

@@gladius881 I believe ZHL Models makes it. I do not know if there are other companies as well. The ZHL is a Chinese company. I personally believe that the best companies in making wooden ship kit are Spanish.

@Cap. BLEX It was built on 1784, definitely it was active in pirates era. It was the aircraft carrier of it's time, enormous fire power. It had 112 cannons and if you compare it with a pirate ship it was like the pirates had a slingshot and the Spanish had guns!

Great build John! i would like to comment to those people asking if they can build this or other large sailing ships with no experience. the answer is not simple, if you have confidence in your own skills, or maybe experience in other model building and am willing to research methods then i would say yes quite possibly. From my own experience my first model is a 1/84 scale hms victory that i am still working on after 2 years BUT the instructions are step by step with colour photos, if i had attempted the Santa Ana it would have been a much bigger challenge. look for a model with superb instructions or where there are good video build logs[like johns] which really help if you get stuck. It can be done but most ship modellers would correctly suggest making a smaller less complicated model to build confidence and skill. Its a really satisfying hobby if you love ships. best of luck.

Thank you Andre!!! You said it all, exactly my opinion :) You do not begin with a model of this type. It is very difficult and expensive so the outcome won't be as good as you want it if it is your 1st.
