San Luis & Rio Grande Winter Steam over La Veta Pass

The line over La Veta Pass to Alamosa and Antonito was originally envisioned as part of an ambitious, and never-realized, narrow gauge (3 feet between the rails) line linking Denver with Mexico City.Narrow gauge tracks crossed the pass in 1877 and reached Alamosa July 6, 1878. The railroad had pushed on to Antonito by 1880 and ultimately to Santa Fe, N. M., and Silverton, Colo. The D&RG built west from Alamosa, completing the line to South Fork and its terminus at Creede in 1881. In 1908, the D&RG was consolidated with the Rio Grande Western to form the Denver and Rio Grande Western (DRGW).
In 1988, the DRGW purchased the giant Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). The combined companies were named for the larger and wider-reaching company, the SP. Union Pacific Railroad (UP) purchased and merged the SP in 1996. On June 29, 2003, the UP sold the Walsenburg - Alamosa, Alamosa - Antonito and Alamosa - Derrick (just west of South Fork) to short line railroad conglomerate RailAmerica (RA). RA sold the SLRG to Permian Basin Railways on Dec. 22, 2005.
Today, it is in receivership, its management changed and its future uncertain. Company management has been terminated and excursion trains are not operating. alamosanews.co...

Skip actually when they lost the battle for Raton, NM they thru in the towel for mexico City, pretty much, and turned their sites for Colorado mining camps. The Santa Fe and DRG then waged war for the royal gorge, with the treaty of Boston that gave the Gorge to the Grande, the santa Fe actually constructing the hanging bridge there . The treaty didn't last but 5 years or so. The line to Santa Fe from Antonito was just to full fill a charter requirement I have read. On this trip we into places that are difficult to access, but it was fun to get in there let's hope we have a reason to get back hope this line will continue for both freight and passenger, the rail on the pass could use total replacement , will see what the future holds. . At least you got to ride it!
