Along the lines of "Worst World Cup" I think "Worst World Cup Teams" as in "Worst 32 teams in terms of points gained" would be an interesting one... would look something like (just using a swiss system) Group A: El Salvador, Egypt, Israel, Iran Group B: DR Congo, Iceland, Angola, Algeria Group C: Haiti, Kuwait, Honduras, Ivory Coast Group D: Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand, South Africa Group E: China, Bolivia, North Korea, Norway Group F: UAE, Iraq, Cuba, Greece Group G: Panama, Togo, Slovenia, Ukraine Group H: Indonesia, Qatar, Slovakia, Wales

I always say this, but I am 100% confident that San Marino isn’t ACTUALLY the “worst” national team. They’re definitely bad, but the fact that they play in UEFA along side giants such as France, Spain and England doesn’t help them whatsoever. I feel like San Marino could probably beat countries like Antigua or Kiribati pretty comfortably. Difference is that those teams play in far weaker confederations, whereas San Marino is surrounded by big teams that pummel them every game

In fact, you are literally proving that point for us with your own comment 😂 By saying they drew with St Lucia you're implying they must be bad becuase St Lucia are also bad. But St Lucia are ranked 43 places above them... If SM actually were the worst team in the world then that would be a decent result right...?

The letter written to Muller made me cry. It was so charitable and highlighted the massive contrast in perspectives and ways people experience football based on where they grow up, the opportunities they have. I don’t doubt that Muller is passionate for the game, I’ve watched him play he’s a personal favourite, but it’s so clear that that these guys appreciate different things to him, the stuff you have to cherish when you don’t have the massive opportunities and stadiums a German legend would. Just heartwarming stuff.

@ddlee84

There was more passion in that letter than Muller has shown in his entire career. I am not saying he is a bad man or that he doesn't enjoy the game at all. But when you have a talent like he does....and you've won everything that he has....and you've earnt the amount of money that he has....you do become complacent about your position in the world. The players for San Marino, Andorra, Gibralter, Lichtenstein, Faroe Islands and Malta(to name a few) pull on their national team shirts with a massive amount of pride which is sometimes missing from the top ranked teams in the world who think of some international games as a distraction, where as these small nations....its a chance to say to their kids "I played with Ronaldo for 90 mins....I even tackled him" or someone like Della Valla " I scored our nations first goal in 5 years and it was as good a header from a free kick you will see" This is what is missing from a lot of football since the money became the driving force in the sport.

If you like San Marino, you should definitely check out the documentary "Next Goal Wins" about the American Samoa team that lost 31-0 to Australia, and would routinely get stuffed by double figures against fellow Oceania teams like Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga, etc.... but they eventually get professional coaching and put together a team that can beat some of the aforementioned teams... there are loads of cool subplots (a transgender player, the goalkeeper v Aus coming back, etc.)... it's actually a real tearjerker documentary as you'd say "what football is all about"

And its not much going on there. But its a beautiful small place😊 And I thought it was much cooler to say I have been there then Venice. Which I thought was a horrible place (because of all the tourists).

The sad part is that San Marino did have good players. But that was a few years before their national team was made. Like Massimo Bonini for example. He featured in a legendary Juventus XI and played like 250 games for the Old Lady, earning him the nickname “The Lungs of Platini”. He even won a few Champions Leagues. He helped set the national team up too and before retiring he played their first matches too (and also became their coach after) Another good shout is Marco Macina. All though not as iconic as Bonini, he could have been, if it wasn’t for a really bad injury that left him to retire from professional football aged 25. (All though he did play San Marino’s first 2 matches in their history too). He played for clubs like Reggiana, Parma and…… AC MILAN. What could have been…… An other good recent example of what could’ve been is Nicola Nanni. Playing in the 3rd Italian tier now and still considered one of their best players, he was a few under contract at then Serie A side Crotone. He made a few Coppa Italia appearances for them, but eventually got loaned to Serie C clubs to develop. Problem was, Crotone was getting worse as well, as far as going to the Serie C too, and now he’s stuck in Serie C (with a different club though) And lastly we also have goalkeeper talent Edoardo Colombo, who got bought for €200k by the Juventus academy a few years back (I believe that’s a Sanmarinese transfer record), sadly never got to the senior squad, but is now also playing in the Serie C for Rimini (in the footsteps of Handanovic lol) Are there new probable talents coming? Yes, there are as far as I know 3 players who play in Serie A academies, Enrico Giacobbi plays for the Bologna U18’s and the brothers Benvenuti, who are under contract with the Sassuolo youth (played a lot last year for them) and now are loaned out from them to Victor San Marino (a Sanmarinese club who just like FC Andorra are playing in the Italian tiers and they’re now in the Serie D) As you said, the rankings definitely aren’t fair since the team above them, Anguilla, just lost 8-0 and 6-0 to Saint Martin in the lowest Nations League rank, and Saint Lucia, who they drew 1-1 to, is killing it in the Nations League B……

The problem is Micronesia wasn't one of the FIFA members and they participated in the 2015 Pacific Games, which is an IOC-sanctioned events, so a big 46-0 defeat to Vanuatu wasn't considered as the highest marginal win in international games, compared to that 31-0 game for Australia vs American Samoa in 2001.

Most of the video clips you posted here were from AwayDays and even Maqwell, who had already made his own version of yours a long time ago. I'm really surprised that when San Marino played against England at Wembley in 2012, ITV displayed a strange line-up for the San Marino by replacing the clubs for each footballers they played from with a word called "professions" and "job occupants". Also, people don't know what happened in 2004, especially when it comes to football: 1.Greece won the European Championship. During that tournament in Portugal, teams like Spain, Italy, and Germany were dumped in the group stage, whereas Greece beat Portugal twice and France; both of them were the host and defending champions at that time. 2.Porto won the Champions League, with the competition also having some big surprises like Manchester United and Juventus' Round of 16 shock exits, Arsenal's defeat to Chelsea, and two huge comebacks for AS Monaco and Deportivo La Coruna in the quarterfinal that eliminated Real Madrid and AC Milan, respectively. 3.Arsenal won the Premier League without suffering a single defeat. 4.Werder Bremen won the historic Double (Bundesliga and DFB Pokal). 5.Valencia won both La Liga and UEFA Cup. 6.Once Caldas claiming the Copa Libertadores was also considered surprise because they were from the Colombia and the competition itself was usually dominated by Argentina and Brazil clubs, but for this competition, the Colombians defeated Santos, Sao Paulo, and Boca Juniors in the Final itself with a some kind of ultra defensive style of play.

Lesser known football is the most genuine football. My hometown team (AD Poiares) plays in the 6th tier of Portuguese football (2nd tier of the regionals). It's a fully amateur club. They play with 200/300 spectators at most. But they're having fun. It's a match without any kind of shenanigans and weeks of politicking. The match starts, they play, the match ends and both teams have some beers together

Not so secretly hoping for a San Marino opening goal albeit winning the first fixture in Helsinki 6-0 in front of a crowd of more than a population of San Marino. Back then our form was much better and now we don't really have a wager in this one except keeping up the ranking for decent seedings for future group stages.

The big footballing powerhouses like England or France never really cared about this tournament. However for League B and C teams winning their group provides a lifeline for potentially qualifying for either the Euros or the World Cup should the qualifiers proper don't end well (Bosnia and Herzegovina had a torrid Euro qualifiers, but were sure for a playoff berth as they've won their UNL League group). And League D offers the minnows the chance to have really competitive matchups and not get hammered by 6+ goals by one of the so called "elite" teams.

People give San Marino a bad rap. They play their hearts out every game, they are not dirty and even at times try to counter attack. If they were in Asia they would be a minimum 30-40 places higher. From memory when England have played them the goalkeeper is actually decent. Yes we battered them last time 10-0(they had a player sent off) but the last couple have only been 5-0 or 6-0 there is no disgrace in that. We know that they are improving, and they will improve. People forget they often end up in some tough groups for qualification which doesn't help their cause. Like you rightly say if you don't want the underdog to improve or win you are not a fan of football

In truth, it was their first successful qualification in the pro era of Asian football, but what a story it was for Chan Siu Kwan to score against UAE. San Marino not beating St Lucia or Seychelles looks bad BUT you have to remember that St Lucia and Seychelles get far more games against opposition of their calibre than San Marino ever do and San Marino are fighting a losing culture as well as the opposition. San Marino and Andorra have only actually played each other THREE times and none prior to 2017 - Yes Andorra have won all three games 2-0, 2-0 and 3-0 San Marino and Liechtenstein have played each other six times since 2003 and not since 2020 - Their record is 1 win, 2 draws, 3 losses and a GD of 3-6 over those six games. San Marino and Gibraltar have played each other just TWICE since Gibraltar joined UEFA 10 years ago - Those two games both happened in 2020 and resulted in a 1-0 home win for Gibraltar and a 0-0 draw in San Marino. These teams should be playing each other every single year, possibly even twice a year to get experience and confidence....and yes World Ranking Points.

However, due to the fact England were the main opponents and even destined to win the game, though they ended up failing to qualify as a result of a devastating defeat against the Netherlands in the previous game, San Marino at that time had been the winner on social media!

If they can sim such a tournament on Football Manager then they could make it real and it’ll be a great alternative and could unearth some potential talents. Imagine hosting it in England using venues such as Turf Moor before hosting the final at Wembley. If they can host the FA Vase final there then they could do this.
