I own this watch in Green. I loved the MM300 in video and pics and then the LX OMG wow. In person though while both beautifully made have IMHO design elements that make them poor daily's or far less impressive and San Martin addressed both IMHO. First is thickness. This is ~13mm and wears close to the wrist, its not at all top heavy. Second the dial size is larger and it has the visual presence of a 44mm. The MM300 dial looks like a 40 or 38, put either beside a Sumo or even Turtle and your wonder why its soo small. That and they took the nicer more impressive LX bracelet and bezel designs. I hope Seiko designers see this piece...it addresses what I suspect are most of the reasons why they dont sell 3x the number of MM300 and LX's.

For being a homage watch they didn't hold back on every aspect except for the extention you pretty much showed us why you would be spending more money for this watch the details on the case alone is spectacular

Nice work Zee, always thoroughly enjoyable with no hype! Quality product as expected from SM (I have vintage diver and version 3 62mas) .... But there's still something about the Proxima that just looks right when it comes to the MM300.... That, and it's a full 70 quid cheaper! However the screw down case back is a big plus for the SM over the monobloc of the Proxima in terms of easy access and movement replacement....Hope you're well and thanks for your hard work.

Hey Neil, Yes exactly i feel the same way about the Proxima although the SM might be technically better. Its going to be subjective at the end I suppose. I agree with the caseback too. Would make it easier to mod and as you said, change movement if needed. Thanks for viewing 🤜🏽

I agree. I don't mind the thickness of the Proxima and their Manta Rays are definitely nicer than that shark. The bezel and hands on the San Martin are really tempting though.

You've gotten pretty lucky to not have any QC issues from San Martin. I own 5 of their watches, every one of them have issues.

@@oktc68 I'm not sure, there's been a couple of them that got watches with bad movements. I bought the sub homage with a sw200 in it, we'll it has a problem with winding, I'll try to wind it and it's really tough, just the other day when I went to wind it, the rotor spun instead. I brought this up shortly after buying the $400 watch and they refused to help out at all. On another one, the lume changed color and degraded on the hands, it took weeks and dozens of pictures, just to get them to send me a new set of hands. I really wanted to like them.

I have this watch and it’s one of my favorites in my collection. I like that its not an exact copy of the Seiko MM300 it has a mixture of the Seiko and St martin’s own design features. I think the bracelet is really nice and comfortable. I have the Genuine Seiko Marine master and this watch gets just as much wear as the Seiko.

I would say there's hardly any of SMs own design features, perhaps bracelet and clasp but the bezel and crown are a copy of the LX series

@@kawi4ev It’s an awesome watch. I have two now of the mm300 homage one with the green dial and one with the black and gold dial. Both have the PT5000 movement and so far the accuracy on both is better than any of my NH35 movements. These Próxima watches are solid and great quality.

Very close to the LX from what I can see. I can't wait to get this one. An interesting design. Although the case is 44mm the bezel steps in a mill or so...giving a 42mm bezel...and then the grip pattern around the outside is quite deep too meaning the black insert is probably the same size as my San Martin 62Mas V4. I reckon this will surprise quite a few people at how well this wears.

I think it's great to have a couple of choices, if you want an older version with the monocoque case, Proxima has you covered or if you prefer the newer version then San Martin has that covered. Not sure I'd choose a San Martin with a PT5000 over the Proxima with SW200 at the same price? Still if they're both running the NH35A it's much closer and comes down to preference for early or later models. Personally I think this is one of the few watches that really come to life on a waffle rubber strap, it really shows of the case's beautiful lines, particularly highlighting those lugs. Excellent in depth look at the San Martin, thanks.

Great watch and review. Congrats. I think what SM and other companies miss is the angulation of the polished faces of the seiko mm300 case. The seiko is more angulated. Consequently, the bezel and the dial of the seiko are smaller. What do you think? When you look frontly to the watch face you see the brushed lugs contrasting with the polished surfaces of the case and that is beautiful. The seiko also looks smaller. But, I love these homages. I sold and re bought the proxima. I am wearing it as I type.

I ordered this but ended up selling it. I liked the watch overall, but i didn't like the finish of bracelet, but worst for me was the coarse slippery knurling of crown, and maybe what seemed like a small crown.

Alot of people stay away from monobloc due to thickness, the Proxima mm300 homage has a monobloc and its a stunning watch. This one provides users with mm300 like aesthetics but without the thickness.

Just a different design. Different bracelet, bezel and crown. Spec wise nothing. I wouldn't worry about WR rating as 200m and 300m is virtually no difference

It looks great….but honestly I’d just go ahead and get the Heimdallr ETA again for a few bucks more. This would have been a hit for me if the bracelet were a little more true to form….but this is for sure a better looking bracelet. I like the idea of the screw down caseback but again it’s deferring from the form IMO. The finishing on this is obviously superior. It’s just hard for me to justify a premium price in comparison to the others, at the end of the day it’s still a Chinese homage watch 🤷🏻‍♂️. And I have nothing against Chinese homages, but SM is getting a little proud lately. Makes sense I suppose, they are popular and people will buy them either way. Edit: this is a fantastic looking watch though…that bezel!

Really TOO EXPENSIVE ! 1 year ago, we could find Steeldive, Addiesdive for less than 200 $ The quality is not probably the same, but Steel/Addies are already great watches.

I don't know, once you get a San Martin, proxima, or the next level up. You really notice the differences and won't ever really look at the steeldives much anymore. The quality difference is definitely worth the price jump. I had about 4 steeldives, and now bought those models in the San Martin variants, because the upgrade is definitely worth it. The dials, the finish, the bracelets and clasp is where the extra cost go.
