I live on Florida's east coast. I keep 40 sandbags on a flat bed dolly in my garage. That way, if a hurricane threatens, I can roll them to areas I need to protect around my house. I'm a weak, elderly woman, but this method allows me to be self sufficient if I had to do it by myself.

I live on the east coast in Florida. Our town only hands out 4 or 5 sandbags per household. (Which is a joke.) Not only that, as is the case right now (as we’re preparing for Hurricane Dorian) you’ll wait in line for _at least_ an hour to get those 4 or 5 sandbags. That’s why I save my old cat and dog food bags and get sand from the beach and my backyard (where I intentionally don’t grow grass) to make my own sandbags.

How is the sand in the sandbag any different than the rest of the soil in the flooded area that it needs special disposal?
@johndoe69405 жыл бұрын
I read that sand isn't as porous as regular soil, say , like in your front yard. Hence, that is why its used in sand bags. If everyone just leaves that sand lying around, it will disrupt that present landscape and affect how water runoff/drainage occurs.
@comaranggaming29614 жыл бұрын
also the fact that you will be removing it from your where it is, it must be moved to access your house properly once the water has receded and yes it will retain more of the moisture and and chemicals in it. seriously the stuff in flood water is just nasty. (as a rule of thumb, the sewerage plant in any town will often be the first place to flood)

The level of PPE is insane. Strapped in electrical resistant hardhats with 4"+ of high viz reflecting material. Z87 BCG safety glasses High viz coveralls with reflective tape above code. Full length hazmat gloves Steel toe leather over ankle boots with oil resistant anti slip treads. Surprised these guys don't have a backup alarm strapped to their tail end, a rotating light on the hard hat and chock blocks for the wheel barrel while loading.

Thank you xx - most useful BUT the sand part is missing - can one use beach sand, if not where do we get sand from? I’m not in flood prone area but do need to isolate a section of my garage from seeping rain water in these unusual rainfalls.
@rickybobby72762 жыл бұрын
I don't think the sand type matters. It's not like it's going to be used in construction where you are worried about the sand washing away over years since the sand is in bags.

Oh look, giant healthy humans, is there a tutorial for small unwell folks, people in wheelchairs, the elderly? Hessian bags cost $5 at bunnings. Where is this pile of sand? What if you don't have a ute? What if you don't have a second person? This is bollocks.
@jarrodmbell6 жыл бұрын
Tani, I think you are being a little unfair there, of course there are people where this may not be the perfect advice for but the vast majority of those in our community could use this information to self help will find this useful. Thus freeing up our (SES Volunteers) time to respond to requests for help from those who cant do it themselves. Its not "Bollocks" it is SES practicing our belief that prevention is better than response.
