Sandblasting and POR15 VW Bug Dweezil Restoration E6

The Dweezil VW Beetle restoration continues! The front suspension and brakes get sandblasted and painted during this step in the rebuild. There’s a few challenges while we use POR15 paint and then add a dust coat of Rustoleum primer. It looks like we might have a storm brewing in the Atlantic, so exciting times are on the way!

Yup, it's a little picky and needs a topcoat but after learning how to use it I've had good results. It sounds like you've got some experience with POR15 and it's good to hear you get along with it well. It's always nice to find something that works!

Hey Busman 54! Glad to see you back in the shop too! Oddly enough, I believe POR15 actually can be purchased in a 55 gallon drum, but most people use that money to buy a house. Good luck with the beam!

Nice Video! I'm about to do the same thing to my beam for my Baja. I have a Thing beam to pull apart, blast, & paint. I'm going to use a different product called "Master Series". I have used it in the past with great results... I did my entire chassis with it before painting it with Rustoleum It STILL Looks Great! I may start making Videos of the restoration/modification to the Bug turning it into a Baja... Looking forward to the next Video!

Thanks, XFretless! I hear a Thing beam is a good way to go for a Baja. I think Master Series paint is a fairly direct competitor to POR15; I've never used it myself but from what people say, I think your great results are common with that product. Good luck with the rebuild!

I still have some in-house projects I'm trying to button up before going back out to the garage, in which I have to reorganize & run wire, plus set-up the Compressor. I just had a line of 220V brought out to the garage, so, I'll be able to run my compressor for the first time in 10 years! LOL!

@@SladesVWBeetle In my opinion, yes, it is... Everyone has their own opinion on everything though. If you want to try it out, You can find it by searching for "Master Series CT" www.masterseriesct.com/. I have seen sheets of the POR 15 come right off & start rusting right away, but, that might have had to do with the prep work underneath as with any paint/coating. A buddy of mine has a 67 Bus he coated it with that's been sitting outside for @ 10 years. Looks as good as the day it was done... He only coated it to protect it till he could work on it. It is NOT sensitive to UV. Sunlight WONT AFFECT it. In my opinion, it' swell worth trying out! I bet you'll like it!

Yup. I'm not willing to "Paint On Rust", but it sticks well to a sandblasted surface. No sticky on smooth stuff.

Brent how long did you let the Por15 sit before you did your primer dust coat?

Hey Backyard Kombi! "A slight finger drag" is the strategy here- meaning your finger kinda wants to stick to the paint as you drag across but you're not smudging anything. Timing will vary depending on temperature and humidity. The high humidity where I am really speeds things up. I know... that's counter-intuitive, it's just how this paint works. The documentation says it's cured by moisture. Kind of a head scratcher but whatever. I usually don't have to wait long (if at all) after finishing the POR15 coat to start the dust coat. Take it easy on the dust coat so the POR15 is able to cure through it. Good luck with the painting!

Hey Tiarii Cat! It's an old hand-me-down TP Tools pressure blaster. I'm guessing it was manufactured in the late 70's? It's seen a lot of family projects over the years!
