I recently used Rust Oleum Rust Reformer on the frame of my Wrangler TJ and a few months ago on the frame of my OBS Ford F-250. So far, so good and time will tell. I've used Chassis Saver, which is similar to POR 15 on my 01 Silverado and it didn't take very long before rust was beginning to reappear. This was after a lot of prep work. I hope that your experience with POR 15 went well. I know that it's like getting a temporary tattoo once you get it on you unless you take it off almost immediately.

I was scared that I made a mistake with the purchase but it seems that I can stop the spreading and replace the rotted parts with parts from eBay.

I love to watch people take care of their vintage TJs. They are the last of the legacy, "Universal," Jeeps. Every year, in autumn, I paint the frame with rustoleum. Then in spring, I scrape, sand, prime, and paint the frame with Rustoleum again. However, you showed me an easy way to get POR 15 with your link. This year, the autumn painting has already been done. But next spring, I will scrape, sand, and then use POR 15 instead of the traditional Restoleum I have been using for the last 23 years on my beloved TJ.

Doing my second truck in 3 years with this. It’s prep-intensive and messy but I’ve been happy with it. I try to hose the undercarriage off after a snowstorm just to keep the salt off and extend the life of the coating. One thing I’m not a fan of is that they recommend a topcoat, which requires scuffing the shine off the POR-15. Between wire brushing, degreasing, acid, 2 coats of POR, that makes 7 passes front to back...I think a nice 2k spray paint would be easier and just as durable....then coat with fluidfilm.

Been using POR15 since 1999. Used it on 3 cars I restored as well as the TJ I own now. Did the underside and took everything out of the tub and did the inside 2 days after I got it. I'n in CT where rust is king and haven't seen any rust issues at all. BUT...prep is critical. If you do not do the prep right and I mean exactly right, POR15 won't last more than a few years. Just follow the instructions on the prep work. I swear by this stuff. By the way, it has the consistency of water which means a little goes a loooong way. Longer than you will believe. And use gloves because it takes 7 days for it to wear off your skin and that's after scrubbing your skin raw.

In 2006 I bought a Wrangler and POR15'd the whole tub inside and under as well as the frame. Sold it 2 years ago, it was in CT on the shore where they salt the roads. 12 years and no rust thru the POR-15. Used it on 3 restores I did as well over existing rust and it stopped rust from advancing. You have to do the prep work, no cutting corners. And you must wear gloves when applying it because it goes on water thin and takes 7 days of scrubbing to get off your skin. Been using it since 2005 and it just works. Oh, if you don't get the heavy flakes off and paint over them they will chip off and the rust will continue there. And, since it goes on extremely thin, a little goes a long way. I think I used 1.5 pints to do the Wrangler.

I've been using por-15 for many years. Great stuff. I've never used any of their prep stuff though. Get the worst of the rust off, wash, let dry. I use a couple coats of rust converter first then thorough dry then 2 - 3 coats of por-15. When por-15 has cured for at least a day, I top off with a couple coats of Rustoleum - especially if it's going to be exposed to sunlight. Holds up very well. Every couple years I clean it up and repeat por-15 and Rustoleum. Don't want to give the road salt a chance to start eating away at it again.

Great video thanks mate. I just got a brand new JKU that had been sitting on the lot for over a year, unsold. A week after buying it I noticed a disgusting amount of corrosion underneath. It had 30 miles on the ODO. Submitted a claim to Chrysler and they couldn't give a shit. So I guess I'm going to have to do the rust mitigation myself. use a nail, punch two holes, for storage simply put screws in the holes, preferably roofing screws. Next time you want to use it, punch two new holes, repeat as nessesary

I have heard a lot of myths about POR 15. I've ignored them all. I have replacement panels for my XJ (rockers and front and rear floor pans from C2C) I prepped them (bare metal) and sprayed them with POR 15. They came out amazing, dried quick, no problems. I am also going to prep and spray the under side of remaining floor material as well as inside of floors before using panel adhesive to glue in new floor pans. I'll finish up with seam sealer and undercoat to complete the "repair". If you spray POR 15, do it in well ventilated area and use all proper protection. The gun cleans up with lacquer thinner. Also, it you properly clean the top of the can, you can just replace the lid like any paint and POR 15 will keep for quite a while.

People laugh when I say it but I plan to make a show truck out of my s10 zr2. Its very rusted out a f needs alot of work but a very good step in the right direction would be to sand down my frame, all cross members, torsion bars, and ect to the bare metal and paint this por 15 on all of it, inside and out. Dont forget to do the inside of the channel frame , thats where the rust starts ! Eastwood sells a spray can with a 24 in. spray hose to spray inside of channel ...... Put a piece of light plastic on top can and below the lid to re seal the can of por-15 , allows you to re-open the can .

Thanks for the video. I'm getting a 76 VW Bus Camper on Wed. When you spray on the degreaser and metal aching spray is it ok for it to get on the various brake lines, hoses, rubber and other materials under the vehicle. Will it damage those?. Thanks.

It is truly the job from hell if you do it right especially when you get underneath. I have a system but use different products (Same type of main product POR15) but I also top coat it. Tried this out on a rusty trailer early last year and so far it still looks like new. It will kill a week vacation and possibly more. Then it's time to get inside the frame with fluid film.

You know what requires zero prep and works perfect? Fluid film. Oil soaked metal cannot rust. It stops rusty metal dead, too. If you coat the frame inside and out annually, you will never produce any rust, even in the salt belt. Next new Jeep you get do it asap and keep on it. I have a 31 year old 88 Toyota truck with zero frame rust. Seen over 20 salted road winters.

heres a good idea for new jeep owners fill the frame with foam insulation and if you plan on running wires in frame run a peice of garden hose for wires then fill it

I just heard about this stuff from a friend that used it on his jeep, pretty awesome stuff. I'm going to use it on my jeep as well but I think I will coat mine with flex seal afterwards to prevent rock chips from knocking it off. I've seen a lot of stuff about rusting jeep frames. Doesn't anybody wash their vehicles underneath anymore,?I do whenever I've driven on salt or gone mudding. Here is another tip for drying after you have washed the frame area to apply POR, use a leaf blower if you have one.

@@ThisIsSolution your gonna have a lot left with a quart. I also did the inside of my Wrangler tub at the same time. Took out the seats, carpet, and did up about 3 inches on the walls so not just the floors. I went thru a few rivers and with the top off, rain would sit so I wanted to do it. It goes on even thinner than stain so a little goes a long way. The prep work is key to getting good adhesion, it soaks in. Sorry, just saw you said 2 coats...quart will work. But I've done 3 cars and the Jeep and you won't need 2 coats. Remember to coat the steering knuckle and gas tank if you go off-road.

You did an excellent job of explaining, showing, and instructing how to use this product. Bravo! I have a new frame purchased from a salvage yard that will replace the rusted one on my Toyota Tundra. Since it had a poor undercoating job done by the prior owner and rusted out and rotted it was not covered under the recall. The frame I bought is in really good shape being a recent replacement frame and at 400 bucks a real bargain. Some places have started to flake off the black from rust infiltration just like your frame ( inside the middle of the side rails ) and some minor surface rust around the engine cradle and mounts. After watching your video I am confident I can get this new frame pristine in no time! My one question is do I treat the black parts of my new frame that are not showing rust or leave them? If I do treat them now, just use the paint after degreaser or should I do the entire 3 step process? I live in Maine and frames have a tough life. Thank you!

Northern Maine I have a 97 tj, and I live in Chicago. I'd say most certainly treat those areas that don't show rust YET! Think of it as prevention. Rust is inevitable, so if you can try to get ahead of it, go for it.

Just be glad you don't have a 3rd generation 4Runner. How Toyota avoided including these in the frame recall (same frame, same material) is beyond me. I bought an un-driveable one and made it driveable, stable, and safe by replacing large chunks of rot with fresh metal, and I'm about to POR15 the whole thing.

You need to coat the inside frame rail for full rust protection. Por15 works well. I prefer an oil spray every fall. Less work an better coverage.

Top coat is a must, you want to protect the rust sealer from chips and scratches as well as uv damage. Por 15 top coat is great but in this situation a good undercoat product would be good too.

My toyota frame only has little surface rust on the welds, so I wire wheel it and looks pretty good metal no rust. I was thinking to put POR 15 on the welds and then put rubberized undercoat all over. What do you think?

Rubberized will seal the condensation in allowing it to rust from underneath. I'm buying a FJ Cruiser with a lot of flake but no rust through and some tiny areas of bubbling paint on the body. Going to grind it down, neutralize it and fluid film the living snot out of it. It's not going to a car show.

This will be all for nothing if you dont clean out inside the frame and coat it too, these frames rot from the inside out due to there being no drain holes. Drill some drain holes clean it out and coat the inside as well

@@ninenights9910 Make sure you have drain holes on the bottom of the frame, then what you can do is take a garden hose and flush it out. After that gets done take your finger and feel inside of the frame on the bottom. If you notice you feel potato chips, those are rust flakes. Get an extendable magnet from the auto store and start pulling the flakes out. this will take some time. Flush the frame with the garden hose again and repeat this process. Once you don't feel any more flakes and you aren't getting much out with the extendable magnet then I would coat the inside of the frame with Eastwood internal frame coating. Make sure the inside of the frame is dry, i would wait a couple days, then do it. POR-15 is some nasty good stuff, but it's only as good as the surface it's going on. So do the prep work! A lot of times guys just scuff the surface, clean it up and slap it on, you really need to ensure all the weak rust flakes come off, or else it's pretty much useless.

Yes, but you would have to really spray them down good with the metal etch product that POR offers. If they aren’t rusty though I would just recommend getting rhino liner and using that to coat them

POR 15 is good but oil works just as good. I coat my frame and get it inside the frame also. Even though you coat the outside your frame will also rust from the inside out. What's nice about oil is it spreads, place a drop on a piece of steel and let it sit overnight and you'll see how it spreads. Used motor oil works great for coating and it's free....POR 15 is expensive.

POR 15 does give the benefit though of creating a nice hardened shell that will last for years whereas oil wears off quick, especially in the winter.

After it's dry and done your not finished. Need to fluid film it Couple days later. These hard coats like por15 over time driving in winter will rust again (soon) from under the paint it will start flaking from rust. You need to still fluid film it or NHOU. Soft coat seals it from moisture and oxygen

They do recommend that you put some type of coating over the POR-15 because it is not UV resistant (the sun will break it down eventually). But I would stray away from any type of rubberized under coating. (If you wanna know why I suggest that search up South Main Auto Repair and watch his video on why rubberized coatings are horrible). What I would suggest though for top coat is POR-15 topcoat which is specifically made for that purpose, or simply get some black paint and use that.

My 99 Wranglers frame rusted right were yours did plus were the belly pan attaches on both sides it was not savable. Chrysler did a crappy job with theses frames, the frame should last longer than the body panels.

Only problem is Jeep frames rust from the inside out, so while using POR15 is a goood idea, if you don’t clean out and coat the inside of your frame with a product like Eastwood Internal Frame coating, your still gonna have a problem. Good video tho
