What I would say to Matt Taibbi is You don't have to choose between either being a Capitalist or Socialist, there is this term called Social Democracy and it's essentially the Scandinavian model where you have a Capitalist economy mixed with more social programs that are government funded. This is what Sanders platform represents even if he, himself, refers to himself as a Democratic Socialist. Bernie has never made any remark or single indication that he would ever want a future where the government makes all goods and services. He simply just wants to take some services off the table that should not be profited off of because they are basic human necessities such as Healthcare and Education.

Mine is #1 - Sanders, my #2 - Tulsi/Yang ⬅ I like some of their policies, but Tulsi's been disappointing lately with her voting for Trump's increased military budget just like Warren, her wavering away from M4A, and her cozying up to Modi & her poor response to the crisis in Kashmir....and Yang has issues in that he mistakenly refuses to tax wealth class or go after Silicon Valley, he wants to prosecute Assange, and he's weak on foreign policy and comprehensive educational reform. His climate proposal is also very unrealistic bc there's alot of reliance on untested technologies that aren't even close to being ready for mass implementation (nuclear fusion, thorium & molten salt reactors, space mirrors, etc). He naively puts too much faith in them without understand the amount of time it takes to build these plants (nuclear power can take anywhere from 12 to 43 years!), which doesn't work within the deadline to reduce our CO2 levels. They also have dangerous consequences, nuclear power being incredibly volatile and waste-inefficient. His plan sounds "cool" to the uninformed, but there's alot of problems with it. *BUT* at least he and Tulsi created their own climate plans, while Warren aka "Ms. I have a plan for that" apparently DIDN'T have a plan, and hijacked Jay Inslee's proposal when he dropped out. Warren is #4 for me, only bc she also hijacked alot of Bernie's ideas and I hope she's smart enough to include him as VP or in a cabinet position. Obviously I'd choose any of them over neoliberals, but luckily I don't have to choose a lesser evil. Thank goodness for Bernie or I'd be sweating trying to weigh my vote for the others. His integrity and consistent record fighting for the people makes my decision a no-brainer.

Oh my gosh that's very interesting. Never considered that. So I've thought about it and decided that it might not be the case. If Trump got a spot on the show, it wouldnt work despite Alec Baldwin's depiction. So I think the factor at fault here is actually the dereliction of journalistic duty by the media that often does a dreadful job reminding the public of heinous crimes these loathsome figures committed when they inevitably crawl back out of their rock for that public image rehabilitation tour. Like everyone has been making fun of the stupid green shirt, but Kate is the first media outlet that actually reminded me about his 'Hitler didn't gas his own people' gaffe. So my tldr is: I think media is at fault not comedians. Besides they won't have had to come in to fill the void if journalists actually informed the public like they are supposed to.

Allen Gigika That’s a bold assumption lol Andrew Yang is, his approach is different, rather than pull the rug from under those who actually like their private insurers, he’d rather present M4A as the better option and as people start to realize the government-induced competition, as well as private companies who will then lower their prices so that they are more affordable, those companies will either have to match those costs more or less or be close down. www.yang2020.com/policies/medicare-for-all/ In addition to that, Bernie’s policies aren’t in it for the long-run and don’t help Americans as much as some people may think whereas Yang’s does.

If by price anchors, you specifically mean curtailing asinine housing, education, and healthcare expense, then yes there are and he has policies that address these individually. Using Finland as an example doesn’t prove anything except the benefits that can come from UBI. Those in that study that reduced the amount of time they worked primarily did it to spend that time to raise their kids, which is just as valuable, if not more, than any 9-5 job. On the other hand, a version of UBI has been in effect in Alaska for several decades now, and as their oil is what funds their dividend, for the rest of America, it will be the tech check, funded by our data that we’ve seen no returns on. It’s the 21st century and data is now even more valuable then oil, this is how we move our country forward in the right direction.

Because anyone who doesn't do so is throwing a lot of vulnerable people who need non-psychotic government services under the bus. This overdramatic rhetoric of "they're all evil except Bernie" has the obvious consequence of discouraging voter turnout if he doesn't win and handing it to the Republicans who benefit with lower turnout. I don't mind being unhappy with Democrats as long as it is completely based in reality and isn't full of bullshit like "they're all the same," because that is obviously not true. Anyone making that claim is fucking over everyone the Republicans have in their crosshairs.

Its uncanny that we had almost a 100yrs to prepare and strengthen the Labor movement and workers rights in the country, not just for factory assembly line workers, but for teachers, for miners, the service industry so that what we are seeing now with USPS, teachers rights, Wal-Mart, uber, McDonalds etc could have been mitigated. What happened instead was, we kept fighting the petty battles against each other and the Industries that needed the Laborers just had enough time to make the jump to Technological advancements, first with IT, then with Automation and now with AI. We were always redundant, but now they have made people of the world a disposable commodity. Amazing! The Green New Deal, combined with UBI and Medicare for all, might be one of the only ways forward to survive for the working class.

.Hi Matt, Hi Katie, I really enjoy your show. It helps me get through one boring work hour a week. I was wondering why you didn't mention Tulsi Gabbards effusive praise of Modi. I keep wondering what her real take on all the injustice his administration promotes in India. Indian Nationalism is his MO. But I 'd like to know how she regards Modi's policies of discrimination and promotion of anti Muslim actions. I write this as someone who is intrigued and glad to hear her anti war rhetoric. Please have her on again and find out where she stands. Thanks

Well, I'm not Matt or Katie, Teresa, but I did see Tulsi Gabbard address your question at least to an extent just before watching this podcast. I've linked and time stamped when the question comes up for your convenience (Modi is addressed in Krystal's follow up question) kzbin.info/www/bejne/moOupH2vbpenb6M I think a longer discussion would be required to work through all of her reasoning, but it's a start.

Perhaps I can help illuminate while, of course, not speaking for Tulsi. Hindus are the indigenous peoples of "Bharat Bhumi" (the original name of India) with an ancient wonderful culture. They were invaded in the 700's AD by the Muslims and brutally subjugated for over 800 years. Search "Hindu holocaust". Then came the British. After 150 years of repressive rule, as a parting shot they partitioned India and another few million people died. Since 1947, Modi is the first PM that has cared for India over the West. If that is "nationalism" then I say let's give them a chance. Modi started programs to lift millions out of poverty. He's not a fascist and I don't even think he's right wing. He's tough on militant Islam, but he actually needs to be. Most people in the West can't imagine what it's like there. He is the PM of India. The US should be allied with India. We should be allied with Russia also, but somehow liberals have become rather insane and are completely messing up foreign affairs with bogus smears like Russia-gate. I think Tulsi Gabbard gets this and wants to promote good relations so we might have some peace on this planet. Or at least avoid total destruction.

@@paulhansen5053 The original inhabitants of the Indian sub-continent were adivasis. The ones who remained in jharkhand, chhattisgarh, even parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat and the Deccan plateau in Telangana. The ones who left are known today by a different name - The Romas. The concept of Bharat Bhumi happened approximately 2500years after mohenjodaro and harappa settlements, more so with the advent of Kautilya, who wanted to unify India under one ruler; which was quite after the Aryan races came from European continent via the karakoram mountain ranges. There is a reason why Hindu leaders - Subhash Chandra Bose and others went to Germany for ideological support against the Brits, to proclaim similarities between the Aryan Races. There is a reason why the Swastika is so clearly emblazoned in both Nazi and Hindu philosophies. The migration of Aryans or the Roma people had created the Eurasian lands as we know it today. It was clearly depicted during Alexander's campaign all the way to Punjab. Most of Upper Caste Hindus in India today are not the original settlers. They were migrants. Hinduism in itself has been a work in progress to develop pagan roots - by incorporating the adivasi way of living with Aryan worshipping of statues, as metallurgy was unknown in that part of the world until 1200BC. Since you showed your love for the original settlers of the Indian sub-continent, you would be happy to know - The adivasis of India today are subjugated as SC, ST, OBC and Naxals. Their territories are being ripped apart, with overall control over ancient habitats, forests, water reservoirs etc. unfortunately, the NGOs that could have given historic records of atrocities in that region have been declared unlawful by the Indian Supreme Court. Human Rights abuses are fairly frequent. However, coming to present day worldview, The idea of Hindu Rashtra, is unfair in a country of 1.3 billion people who were striving for secularism as part of their constitution for 70yrs, and has close to 300million minorities, not just Muslims, but Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Christians and Jews. Taking a snapshot of Indian history to prove a point is dangerous, simply because it has been a long time in the making. It does not do the country any favours being continuously embroiled in internal strife and conflict. When income and wealth inequality, pollution, unemployment, health standards etc. are all major concerns, riots on the basis of religion is acting like a distraction from the issues that determine the standard of living for an entire nation. Guess what, Modi, RSS, BJP know this but are acting against the best interests of the country they claim to love.
@paulhansen50535 жыл бұрын
@@PapaGolfRomeo The adi-vasis of India are referred to as such because they are more tribal/primitive, not that they are the only indigenous peoples. You mentioned the Aryan invasion theory, but that theory was invented by Europeans with very flimsy evidence, in order to bolster their colonization of India. There's much more evidence that the Vedic/Aryan culture of the Indus-Sarasvati is completely indigenous and goes back to the end of the last ice age, about 7500 BCE. It's a fallacy to assume that indigenous cultures must be primitive.
@paulhansen50535 жыл бұрын
@@PapaGolfRomeo Also, I don't know why you're talking about the crazy Nazis or what that has to do with anything. The Indian swastika is an ancient good luck symbol and the Nazis perverted it. Bose went to Germany not to proclaim anything but rather to get help from Britain's enemy to help fight England in the struggle for independence.

Two weeks before the WFP endorsed Warren, Warren endorsed a WFP candidate, Kendra Brooks, for Phila. (PA) City Council, upsetting Republicans because as the minority party, they were allotted space on council. This also upset some Dems because super-progressive councilwoman (and Democrat) Helen Gym also endorsed Kendra Brooks. Anyway, this might have to do with WFP supporting Warren.

Hey Matt /all, if you want some great background on why and how Soviet efforts to realize socialism failed to deliver and actually harmed subsequent efforts to realize it elsewhere, check out Bertrand Russell's The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism (1920). He was literally there, and it recounts his meetings with Lenin, Trotsky and Gorky as well as his direct observations of what was happening in average people's lives. "In the interests of Communism, no less than in the interests of civilization, I think it imperative that the Russian failure should be admitted and analysed." Although this book represents a trenchant critique of the Soviet experiment, Russell remained, in his final analysis, an advocate of socialism (or as he called it in early editions, Communism).

Worth repeating: 35:33 Nathan Robinson: "The lack of attention in her [Elizabeth Warren] policies to building labor unions and enlarging the labor movement - there's not much about that on her [Elizabeth Warren] website - and its a fundamental part of the Left worldview that unless you adjust the power-balance between workers and owners, you're not really going to change anything; and that's why the labor movement is so central to the Left".

After taking a closer look into Warren's record and the issues raised about her campaign in the last few months (WFP bought endorsement, the Senate Corporate Cash transfer, and the votes for Trump's military budget increase), my vote now is fully on Sanders. I think most voters need to put her through some serious scrutiny. Apparently her team is trying to throw smoke into the WFP issue, but the fact they omitted the poll results, and her daughter and also her campaign financier were part of Demos when the money transfers happened, builds enough evidence to support this story. It's a shame. I now feel she's been used to split Sanders progressive base and destroy his campaign before Super Tuesday. And he can't do anything about it.

One must realize that the objective above all else is to beat trump. A second term for trump could be categorically disastrous for our nation and the world, perhaps much much worse than the first term . I ,personally, am for Bernie but should Warren gain the nomination( and I am very cognizant of the differences between them ) I will avidly support her. Furthermore, even should Biden win the nomination ( quite disappointing to me if this should happen) I will vociferously support him even with the lack of necessary progress for the Democratic Party and the country his Presidency would represent. But re-electing trump , if the Democrats of every position and persuasion do not support the Democratic candidate , strongly support the nominated candidate - the day after the election trump an even more dangerous and disastrous trump will be the President of the United States. I am enormously for Medicare for All or Single Payer, anything to relieve us of the profiteering perpetuated on the public in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Bernie is very serious about helping us here. Elizebeth Warren says she is with Bernie on this issue. I do not know how serious Warren would really be about the entire overhaul of this system as President. Even so, out of utter necessity, Elizabeth Warren must be very strongly supported if she is the nominee. Etc....

Here we can very clearly see the Differences between Bernie and Warren, which they sadly haven't done themselves but will hopefully do soon. Regardless as to who you support they need to help make the choice clear for people to decide, and for us to see just where the Democratic party and U.S. society stands at this point in its' history.
