Sandhan Valley - Trek to the Valley of Shadows

Have you ever imagined a trek in a Gorge/Canyon. In the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra lies one of the longest canyons of the Western Ghats a.k.a Sahyadris.
The Sandhan valley is literally the 'Valley of Shadows'.
It is a trek that is a full-length descend from one point of the gorge starting from the Samrad village near Igaturi town and ending up near Dhene village. These two villages act as the base villages for the trek.
In our opinion, the Sandhan Valley trek is STRICTLY a POST-MONSOON or a WINTER SEASON trek. We request each and everyone of you to avoid going for this trek during monsoons because the water flow is magnanimous and the place has nothing except huge boulders and snakes.
We felt the dire need of a pair of sandals on this trek since one has to take off his/her shoes during few sections where there is still water (at times till waistline) to be crossed.
In our opinion, the trek to the valley of shadows is one of the best Post-monsoon treks in the Sahyadris (Western Ghats) that you should experience for sure.

When I went there last year .....we camped near a lake at Samrad village. Its a huge water body and the views from there are so amazing.

Hey, how did y’all manage with the rappelling part. Do you have to contact someone? And how did you return as there were steep rocks, it must’ve been impossible to climb back up or did you chose another route back home?

We carry our own rappelling equipment (Rope, Seat harness, carabiners, descender, helmet) and we came back from a different route. No one generally climbs up back.

Cool stuff, how you reach samrad village, Is there any chance to get public transportation for base village. I am planning to go from Mumbai.

Yes, I went to Igatpuri by train, you can do the same and then you'll find bus stand at walking distance. From there take a bus to koti and from there a bus will take you directly to Samrad. In return, a bus starts from Samrad early morning in which most of the school going children go. So, make sure you catch that one.

It is not necessary to do it with a trekking group. But you'll definitely need local support when it comes to equipment and safety. You can get contact number of locals organising the trek on the internet. 😊
