Merry Christmas Brock family! Always look forward to your vids and your Christmas one made me smile :) Keep up the good work. Your operation is truly inspiring. Here in western Canada we lamb a group of ewes in mid November to mid December outside in a corral with enclosed shelters. We spread out the lambing period because it helps to avoid mismothering if only one or two ewes lamb at a time. The lambs are tough and do well if they are singles or twins. For this reason we select the winter lambing group from really good mothers that can keep track of their lambs in a group setting. Anyone that has triplets are moved into the limited space we have in the barn, or we bottle feed the smallest lamb. The rest of the ewes lamb out on pasture in April or May. I like your barn system better. Hope to have a lambing barn one day. Guess I’ll have to ask Santa for one lol
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
Love this system! I think at the end of the day, we design our management systems around our environment and what we have to work with... You know what your limitations are during those months and you've found a way to make it work. I guess in my system, time seems to be my limiting factor with the overlap of crop work, so lambing them in a tight period of time is a solution, but creates more work during that period. Thanks for sharing!!

We had one that never bagged up either but was incredibly big...so waited and waited and she never lambed. Was happy to just hang out and be a jungle gym for the lambs to climb on and jump off of. We ended up selling her at 280 lbs. We have a whopping 10 ewes to lamb out this year (the most for us so far) due in 3 months or so. It's a lot of work, but very exciting! Hope you're able to relax and enjoy the holidays! Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thanks for all your awesome videos! Just wondering what temperature your barn is during lambing? Do you ever have to intervene with heat when it gets too cold? Thanks so much!
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
The barn is COLD in the winter... so I have quit lambing in January and February. But in the day, I have tried adding some heat lamps but quickly pulled them back out when the lambs preferred to stay there and not get up and find mom for food. Honestly, what I've found is if those lambs get licked off and fed, thats there greatest chance of survival. Once they are through that first 24 hours, the cold actually helps with their health and growth.
@melissagerold1525 жыл бұрын
Merry Christmas! What's the air temperature in your barn? I noticed there's no heat lamps hanging. I use em sparingly down here near Chicago, when it gets below freezing, am I being too cautious? Thanks for the vids and info!
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim! Merry Christmas! I don't use heat lamps here... The barn gets cold... especially at night. In the day however, if there is sun, that barn can typically get about 5-10 degrees C higher than outdoor temps. I tried heat lamps in little huts my first year when temps were really bad in January and Feb... but I pulled them out when lambs decided they didn't want to leave that space to go get a drink from mom. I lost so many lambs that year. The cold barn doesn't hurt them... in fact, as soon as those lambs are dry and have a belly full of colostrum, I find they do better in the cooler temps. Less respiratory problems, they eat more, so they grow well. BUT, I don't lamb in January and February anymore. LOL.

Hi Sandi.. why do you think birth rates are lower this time? You mentioned 1.8 , i believe it was over 2.0. Thank you and wishing you a merry Christmas.. happy new year..
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
I think it could be a seasonality thing here... They were bred in July, so out of season. Wondering if that was a factor... These same ewes averaged 2.3 lambs per ewe when they last lambed in March...
@erkerk46405 жыл бұрын
@@SandiBrock thank you Sandi.. dont know if you will see my next question: how do you calculate birth rate? I see different numbers used as base. Some are using the total number of ewes that were bred, but some are using only the number of ewes that give birth.

OMG THATS HORRIBLE❗& she thinks it's great. What is wrong with her? She loves Christmas time & was hoping she was going to get to be in the barn and with her animals. She had no business having kids or really even married. What does Mark get as far as a wife. He spent over half a mil so she wouldn't miss being in a barn. She hates her house, don't like and rarely do work in the house she doesn't like. She prefers to be away from the husband and children with her sheep. She rarely cooks oh I could go on & on. My point is what do the husband & kids get in return. A BIG FAT " O". She's so selfish and cold also she is a " TAKER" Mark and the kids probably prefer not to be around her much anyway. Oh how I could go on and on but will stop here cuz all of you people that thinks she can all but walk on water are probably about to have a cow about now lol.
