This sense of humbleness is what makes a great Farmer, especially long term. Keep it up man. Proud of you.

We lost our little monster this weekend. Asher, a 120-130lb chocolate lab. over 8 hours he lost the use and strength in his hind quarters. Spent 3 days at the Vet. Brought him home Friday evening. Had a good night and day but that evening, very late, he started to whimper and even “scream” out in pain. He lost any control of his body, including his head and upper torso as well as bodily functions. He went to heaven at 9 AM Sunday morning. This was a tough one due to how quickly his symptoms came about. Fed his at 8PM the night he first got sick and by 1 AM he was incapacitated. One of my top 2 fav dogs ever. He lived to be 9 3/4 years old. RIP Asher.

I thought about that, too. But then I remembered there are giant granite boulders a few inches down. Different than digging in a lot of areas. Easiest fix is to dump a pile of woodchips and spread them around the trough. People always forget how helpful woodchips are for trails and fields to absorb water and make muddy areas walkable.

Idea so the yard doesn't get mucky from dumping water: a drainage system with a trench leading outside the fence that is filled with gravel. Just dump the water onto the gravel (it wouldn't need to be a large area) and let gravity do the rest. Not sure if the water would freeze or if this would even work. Good luck!

For the watering set up for the birds winter yard, I think you need a really good sized gravel pad. If you want to go the extra mile, build a wood shed type structure over the gravel pad, and run “under floor heating” in the gravel pad with those roof heating cable things. Then you solve the mud, and the slippery ice problem, and maybe even can keep the water dishes from freezing solid. Also could use the roof to collect water, and you would have a solid structure to attach you divided watering hose contraption. Not very financially friendly, probably, but would solve a bunch of problems.

You should get a small wood chipper to deal with any leftover branches (and tougher weed stems as well). You can add the wood chips to a compost pile or use them as bedding, for poultry they're generally better than straws (last longer and don't clump up as much). An electric chipper is less than $200, but works slower because you need to break up the branches first and feed them in stick by stick, so I'd recommend a gas powered chipper (5-8hp 2 stroke) with funnel type intake, should be around 5-600 bucks.

I use small tree branches like that for propping up house plants or young outdoor sapling's. I have a couple 20 foot indoor plants that need a little help to stay upright. You could also just stick it (no pun) in the ground at various places where you're apt to stop and need a handy place to hang something - ropes, gloves, hats, stuff. They're nice for wild birds to land on too if you have a bare spot.
@sarahjames4860Ай бұрын
Suggestion for both the bird yard muckiness and the goat sticks: wood chips. Chip up the leftover branches, spread around the bird water to add traction and soak up water. Some crushed rocks may also be good for the bird yard.

Another idea for the sticks is if you get them when they're still flexible is shaping them into stars. You can do the same thing if they're dry, you just have to cut and bundle them properly. After you get them shaped & tied, you either nail them or tie them to stakes of varying lengths, wrap some LED fairy lights around, and you have charming holiday decorations. If I could do it with sticks I had in my yard, you can do the same...or the local schools can have a committee assemble them. The lights are available pretty inexpensively if bought in bulk (20-30ft for about $2 or less/each). Maybe high school art classes or service groups can get school credit for doing them? Anyhow, they're pretty easy to put together and inexpensive, to boot. I think I spent $10 total (without lights) to make 50. The costs were twine, stakes, and soil (because I put them in plant pots with my amaryllis and poinsettia). Not bad, right?

An easy solution to help control the mud issues around the hoop coop, is to scatter some if the left over sticks from the goats in that muddy area to help maintain some form of firm ground, or at the least allow for more grip. You don't need a lot really, just enough to stop karge mud spots from forming from repeated travel
@mrs.brunke443Ай бұрын
Extra sticks. Well, you could try making a rustic divider fence with them. I saw this done in the Netherlands. I'll try to explain it clearly. Lay out the fence line you want and place upright stakes made from some of your fir branches or leftover lumber or what-have-you along the fence line. Spacing would be at your discretion and needs but it's going to have to be a bit shorter than the average length of your sticks/branches (you'll see why in a couple more sentences). The height is also your preference - the one I saw was about hip high to an adult. Then you put out a parallel line of stakes matching the first one and about 8-12 inches apart. You've now created a "corridor". Take your sticks/branches and start laying them horizontally in the corridor until you reach the height of your stakes. The stakes of course keep the branches contained in the corridor which has turned into a stick fence. The one I saw was functional in the sense that it divided one area in a park from another but of course would not keep most farm animals contained or anything like that. I liked it so much that I made a small one to go around the small pile of scrap wood and sticks that I keep to burn in our fire pit in the backyard.
