I didn't get it first but I suppose it coolness in that he combines dancing and creating a beat with sound his legs make

I toured in a band with him many years ago. We did a one or two numbers each show where he did his sand dance---the sound quality was so much better in person! This is such an old recording, it all sounds kinda mushy. He was so great. Really sweet guy, too. My mom came to one show and I introduced her to Sandman before the show. He leaned over to me just before he went onstage to dance and said, "I'm dancing this one for your mama". I told her later and she didn't believe me!
