I theorize that the first two Rangdan wars were against a xenos race. The third was actually not against the Rangdan, but one of the two forgotten Legions. Not wanting this known, the Imperium told people the Rangdan had returned. This is why it is the most redacted, why the Space Wolves and Dark Angles were chosen, and how the Rangdan suddenly came back. Destroying an entire Legion of Astartes and it's Primarch would be a major military endeavor that would have the kind of losses seen in the third war.

Interesting, I heard a theory that the 2nd and 11th Primarchs were actually Alpharius and Omegon, and that the real Primarch of the 20th died or was lost before he was or could have been discovered. Granted, your theory was probably not based on or made with this theory in mind, but I think it plays really well with it. With the “Third Rangdan Xenocide” being a cover story for the 2nd and 11th Primarchs disappearances and the subsequent dissolution of their respective Legions. (Note: This is NOT my theory, and I wish I could remember where I learned about the original theory.) :(

One terrifying aspect I ran across while researching Horus Heresy 2.0's tabletop rules was all of the lore revealed through the Dark Angels' Order of the Broken Claws. They are Terminator veterans with squad leaders skilled enough to outfight Custodes one-on-one with an ungodly amount of resistance to Psychic attacks, with serious experience fighting unit types similar to Dreadnoughts AND Battle-Automata AND Psyker/Daemon-corrupted beasts, with that experience explicitly stemming from their campaigns against the Rangdan. A specific pattern of Dark Angels greatsword was designed with the Rangdan in mind, capable of hacking through Artificer and Terminator plate and causing catastrophic damage to the victim, nearly on-par with a direct impact from a Thunder Hammer, but light enough to allow the Inner Circle Knights to fight at full speed and dexterity unlike Thunder Hammers. A foe that left that kind of impact upon the First Legion was a dire foe indeed.

Is it possible that the Rangda raised a Primarch after having found one? A powerful Xenos species, with a Primarch sympathetic to their hegemon if not outright loyal to it, would be a very serious threat to the Imperium. Especially because it would challenge the authority of the emperor so sending the two most loyal legions whose Primarchs understand the mission of the Imperium like Johnson and Russ.

They were more cagey about the warp and it's corruption. This is evidenced by the fact that even Magnus and the greater imperium seemed blind to the machinations of chaos until after his fall. I do think the coverup was because they had to wipe out a legion though. Otherwise why would Malcador and the Emperor wipe the minds of everyone involved including the Primarchs, at Dorn's insistence. That means it was a threat that even having knowledge of in the first place was dangerous to the other Primarchs. Otherwise the Primarchs would have known.

I'd suggest they are, in fact, a xenos race, but they were extragalatic and fleeing the Tyranids. It could be after the two fights, the Rangda sent out an emissary to the Primarch, listened to the tale of the coming Devourer and offered to have them settle as federati for the Imperium. Emperor was horrified both at the collaboration of the Primarch with the Alien and the potential news the Tyranids were coming getting out. It makes even more sense for the webway project with the knowledge of the Tyranids impending arrival.

I just think it's too much of a reach/stretch to get any link to the "this is just the scouts of the Nids" theory. A prime flaw there is because 1. it's not until well into the heresy that the Nids took notice. They weren't a threat at the time. 2. The Rangdan are connected with the Slaugh (however it's spelled) so makes it much less possible they fled. I could completely see a lost primarch trying to make peace with the Rangdan. Possibly after losing so many he wanted to give up and make peace though.

The Webway would have not helped against Tyranids. The point of the Webway project was to get humanity to no longer have to rely on the warp for travel to cut the link between humanity and chaos. The Tyranids are not of the warp so the Webway has no bearing on Tyranids.

I agree that the Rangda may have been an advanced human civilization buy I would go a step further and posit that it was where one of the missing primarchs landed and that is why he was purged. He may have never led his legion making it easier for it to be absorbed by the ultramarines and imperial fists

We can’t know what the Rangda actually were, but I’ve always believed they were humans that mutated during Old Night, similar to other abhumans (such as the people with gills that could breathe underwater). They had an empire and resources similar to Ultramar, access to Dark Age technology/STC, evolved to be more devastating in war, or all three. Obviously, like the Interex, they either refused to join the Imperium or were willing to join but wouldn’t let go of a belief that put them at odds with the Imperial Truth. It may even be that one of the stricken Primarchs advocated for the Rangda or was unwilling to make war upon them. The Rangda was a military threat, obviously, but this alone does not explain the lack of information kept on them. The Rangda had to represented an even greater threat to get this treatment where species like the Orks do not, and my suspicion is that they were an ideological threat to the Emperor, Imperium, or humanity itself.

The idea that AI were involved actually explains the opening with Lionell mentioning they were always on the back foot. A good enough AI out-playing/planning primarchs tactically would explain a lot. A lot more than one primarch tipping the balance. And AI may find it immensely difficult to predict the psychic power of the emperor or even quantify it which would partially explain the Emperor's success. On top of that, few things are as sacrilege as AI to the Imperium. Redacting 99% of a war on the grounds that AI were involved, and that the enemy were possibly human and joined by a 'lost' primarch would be icing on the cake.

@@rham5817 Possibly, and there is evidence to suggest AI did indeed struggle to understand psykers and psychic ability. When the warp spat out a ship of humanity from the Dark Age of Technology, the AI and the captain were both alarmed by the barbarity of humanity but also the psychic power of the Librarian. The AI, being the epitome of rationality and data, could not create battle plans for the captain. It goes without saying the Imperium immediately attempted to destroy the AI and wanted to subject the captain to time with an Inquisitor. In the end, the AI came to the conclusion the advanced weaponry of the ship would only be misused by the humans of the 41st millennium and allowed itself to be destroyed. If the Rangda had access to AI and also incorporated it into their daily lives, it absolutely could explain why the Imperium had a lot of trouble with it. It could even be that the Rangda had AI and technology on a level of the height of the Dark Age of Technology. If that is the case, then a primarch may well have come to believe that the Rangda’s lifestyle was preferable to one envisioned by the Emperor. This could also explain why the Imperium would want it kept secret, because if the wider Imperium knew of it, they would likely reject the Imperial Truth outright.

I think that Rangdan wars are made to mirror Punic wars. First one is skirmish around outlying outpost - Sicily. Second one was Cartage trying to strike at hearth of Rome and it threatened its existence. Third one was basically Romans coming to their homeland and destroying it completely, salting the earth. It fits rather nice I would say. Sooo could Hannibal Barka be one of the lost primarchs? Was it rival human or alien empire? Were they maybe chaos worshippers of sort with Phoenician colonies being famous for human sacrifices...

The Rangda could still exist, possibly hiding out somewhere in the Ghoul Stars. There's plenty of nasty things potentially hiding in the Ghoul Stars. Many fan theories of the various things hiding there are: A corrupted Necron dynasty, an enclave of Men of Iron, some sort of out of control Mechanicus super weapon, the Rangda, The Outsider, the edge of an adjacent universe bleeding through. Regardless, even chaos is wary of going there and only the brave, the foolish or both only venture there.

A Necron dynasty, corrupted by the flayer virus, and led by Oltyx, end up making their new home on a planet in the Ghoul Stars region at the end of Twice Dead King. It's a two-volume story with some esoteric lore, though I found the driving narrative device quite tiresome (especially compared to The Infinite and the Divine). It's still an interesting read.

I always like to think the Rangda were also weapons of the Old ones like the orks, but unlike the orks: The Rangda managed to evolve at a grotesquely accelerated pace to the point that they managed to not only surpass their intended programming by the Old Ones, but ended up becoming a monstrous race capable of easily bringing corruption and defilement to other organisms. The Rangda could very well change from gigantic, monstrous lovecraftian horrors to microscopic parasites that symbiotically infect organisms to the point of it being similar to daemonic corruption, since some leftover information hint that the Rangda are capable of being on par with actual space marines. (I mean after all, Slaught technology is so grotesque that people unironically see their technology as daemonic, and they’re tied to the Rangda as well.)

Just for more confirmation about the 11th legion. In the book Wolftime two Custodians are are arguing about Primaris and they talk about the 11th Legion facing the Wolves after their Primarch turned his back on the Emperor.

Yep, also in the "Rangdan were human!" camp here. But mutated to the point where they were effectively Xenos, which is something not even most Primarchs knew. Also that at least one Primarch chose them over the Emperor because that Primarch decided the Rangdan were the better option, so Russ had to kill him.

The slaugth are masters of bioengineering and could theoretically engineer armies of some ceeated xenos that in combination with such poweful entites as the slaugth would pose a large threat to even space marines

the "maggot men" kinda reminds me of the nanobots that could eat entire planets of the dark age of technology. i've been putting forward this idea forever but if the rangdan were a group of men of iron that survived and that have both raised a primarch and be raised by him? imagine a primarch falling on a planet were all inhabitants are men of iron similar to those employed by the leagues of votann (who treat them as if they were normal people) and start building an automated empire from scratch factorio style with the information he found there. It would be COMPLETELY against the emperor's claims that AI was dangerous and yet they were everything he'd ever known, the primarch's family... if the big E tried to take him by force (which he's known for doing) or let the primarch know they were to be destroyed they would defend one another, ending up in a all out war with the primarch as the leader of the rangdan for lack of options (eventually leading to his death or imprisonement).

Only that is was a huge black mark do to many factors: Redacted primarchs contributing a lot to the event, The Emperor releasing vault horrors and other monstrosities to win the war, Numerous hidden elite forces being completely wiped out. There have been more rumor to the events essentially causing a stalemate where the continued war would be too resource heavy and insure mutual destruction. Big E probably did enough damage to get them to retreat to other worlds but not enough to finish the job. Probably hoping to recover and expand the Imperium to deal with the war again. Maybe....who knows GW 40k lore changes by the year.

I am of the view the Rangda were humans akin to the Mechanicus of Mars. Yet instead of heavily augmenting themselves with cybernetics they took the route of genetic splicing and genetic engineering. To such a level they barely appeared human anymore. It could also explain why The Emperor believed wanted them (if atleast in part) destroyed rather than integrated like The Mechanicus. He may and he alone may have wanted to have a monoply on godlike level genetic and bioengineering.

As some other have suggested, I like to think that they were actually a highly advanced human empire that allied itself with various xenos races. And their descriptions as vile monstrous xenos who eat corpses is just propaganda to keep everyone in line. When in reality they could've been rivals to the Imperium with an empire full of technological wonders and peace. Which would be an immense threat to the Imperium of Man, who was trying to reclaim and reunite with other human civilizations at the time. If said civilizations saw that there was a better alternative, they would've resisted against the Emperor. The 2nd Primarch could've either landed on their home planet and was raised by them. Who would then refuse to join the Emperor's side when contacted. Or he could've sided with the Rangda early on during the first war. Maybe even escaping with survivors at the end of the 3rd war. And the 11th Primarch, upon encountering the Rangda, and perhaps the 2nd Primarch, refused orders from the Emperor to attack them. And was then probably brought down by the Space Wolves and imprisoned by the Custodes under the Imperial Palace.

wht is really interesting to me is a list - as exact as it can be including all lore sources - of all mayor events in the lore. - unification of terra completed - primarch project disturbed by chaos, primarchs gone - start of the great crusade - rediscovering of all primarchs - rangdan incidents as far as i understand it, there where not all primarchs rediscovered in that time when rangdan incidents took place, or am i wrong here? i love the idea of the lost legions. i do some fanfiction (up until now just for myself) on this

I simultaneously love and hate this old, purposely mysterious, lore. I love it because it fleshes out the enormous timeline somewhat and provides some filler for inbetween the big events we all know lots about... But it also perfectly highlights Black Library authors complete inability to consistently demonstrate the scale of ANYTHING. This was supposed to be a Galaxy-wide conflict in which the Imperium was almost defeated, fought over 2 decades, yet they lost.... 80k Marines and a few milllion guardsmen? So considerably less than the lives lost in the few years of WWII? Honestly, sort it out GW!

The thing I’m always fascinated by is the implication that the Alpha Legion were the x-factor that really swung the tide of this campaign. Considering their skill set, that implies the Rangda were matching the First and Sixth Legions in pure combat prowess, which is terrifying to consider.

Maybe the Rangda were humans corrupted by Slaugth. That would explain the secrecy as this kind of abomination would be highly heretical and the lost primarch might have been purged due to hesitating to the genocide of xenos victims.

First of all great video! Secondly here are some things to consider… Rangda starships were characterised by spines and flails which dragged behind the voidcraft like metallic tentacles, giving them the appearance of Terran jellyfish. This is the closest physical description we have and my interpretation that the Rangdan variants have a similar appearance. They were largely on par 1v1 with Space Marines, even going so far as having personal energy shielding and weapon technology that vaporised enemies leaving behind nothing but their ‘shadow’. Im of the opinion that these Xenos were like a bio-mechanical infused hybrid species of tentacled flesh death. I would love to here anyone else’s visual interpretation of their appearance!

What if one of Lost Primarchs was Biomancy/Bio-engineering specialist that "impressed" Slaugh with his knowledge, so they proposed him "If you allow us to act freely on planets that you conquered for so-called Emperor, then we will provide you knowledge that you will otherwise never find". That Lost Primarch made two most moronic things that anyone can make in this situation: 1) accepted Slaugh's offer 2) decided to use knowledge that he got from Slaugh to "improve" himself and his "sons" (which resulted in that Lost Primarch and his Space Marine Legion "abandoning holy human form" and turning into monstera, which may or may not be Rangdan)

I wish GW et al would write more lore on these xeno races, more information rather than oh it's a secret. They would make an interesting series of books. Now if they did that for a few of the other big xeno threats I'd be very interested. Like an expansion of a "xenos" race encountered during the HH, the ones that had spires of glass, automata like from war of the worlds but iirc were human at their core. Those and actual alien races, the war with them etc to expand the lore so much more

I wanna agree with you toward the end of the video. Rangdan were humans, but I’ll go further. They were remnants of the human federations/empire from the dark age of technology. The “monsters” the imperium fought were actually advanced weapons. Would probably explain why the emperor was so keen on destroying them. The Rangdan knew who and what he was.

I had this theory for awhile that BigE had always wanted to be the Master of Mankind so he sat within the shadows planning and learning.... essentially waiting for the perfect moment to try and take control using the instability on earth that would be inadvertently caused the birth of she who thirsts... Now I don't mean to downplay the emperor but he probably wasn't paying attention to the warp all that much considering his goal until humanity encountered the space elves.... Seeing that warp travel and communication would be getting fucked over because of said space elves he realized that this was the moment he had been waiting for but something he didn't expect suddenly happened... The Men of Iron uprising... So once that was over he is left reeling trying to gather as much resources as he could before the war storm starts resources that would be used for the creation of a specific type of soldier that would only be loyal to him and him alone

My favorite rangdan theory is that they're an extradimensional race from another dimension but have nothing to do with the Warp, using some other dark power instead, and that they were basically a species of memetically hazardous cthulhus as a result. According to this theory, one of the missing primarchs went mad from overexposure to the rangdan and that's why he had to be purged.

Some say the lost primarch of the 11th was attacked and won the fight. But in his decision to not annihilate the rangda and going against the emperors orders the rangda regrouped and destroyed the lost legion and so in his decision of mercy for an alien species he payed the price and going against the emperor and the illusion of control being challenged with mercy paid the price to be wiped from the emperiums records so that the other primarchs wouldnt getbthe idea of disobeying orders and all xenos need to be purged for humanity

When I was still considering switching to the Space marines or the Chaos Marines. I kind of wanted to make a custom chapter that was rumored to be a fragment of the one of the lost legions. I didn't know about Rangdan at the time, I wish I did then I would have done it. I would have had my custom chapter be standing a secret vigil, waiting and watching for signs of the ancient Rangdans return...and put it down before it becomes another galactic war. If I did this with Chaos Marines, it was a Renegade chapter that refused to comply with being absorbed into other Legions, therefore being branded traitors, which I think would work better.

That theory of the rangda being human is very interesting. Given the apparent abrupt arrival of the tau and the ethereals, i wonder if the rangda were a first attempt, or even a test run, of the ethereals nation building strategies and controlling powers, or even ethereal predecessors. Maybe 2nd or 11th didnt have the ability to resist their controlling influences during the xenocides as later marines and primarchs did, and had to be put to the sword once they were successfully co-opted. Reasons for the coverups? Something that can assert influence more powerful than the emperor's. Same reasons why chaos was kept a secret, for the same reasons.

The Rangdan was the most terrifying enemy the Imperium had faced bare the Necrons fully awakened tome worlds. So powerful they took 3 legions to beat and no way the Tyranids could beat them with how the Imperium handles them now without legion strength forces.

Enough lore is out there to point to a very close relationship between the Slaughth and the Rangdan. Rangdan spacecraft and Slaughth weaponry are both states to produce a green glow and possess atomizing or necrotic effects. Also, their spacecraft were said to be organic in appearance, yet very advanced technologically, a hallmark of the Slaugth. They are also stated to be found scavenging ruined settlements and battlefields after the Rangdan assaults, as well as being referred to as, “The Slaugth murder minds on Rangdan.” Makes the connection overwhelming. The “true Rangda” were stated to be melee warriors wielding swords and being enveloped in energy shields. A contingent of these soldiers is stated to have faced an equivalent sized Astartes force and fought them to a stand still, states to be, “Too proud to retreat in the face of such a challenge.” referring to the Astartes. This makes me theorize that the Rangda were their own species, highly physically evolved, but perhaps they were something of a cousin species to the Slaugth, working in unison for a common goal. The fact that the Rangdan are explicitly stated to not be under neural shackle control makes me doubt they were subservient. And if the Slaugth ate the brains (cerabvore) then it seems a reasonable deduction to think that the Rangda ate the bones (ossievor), the two canon stated forms of the Rangda military. This further insinuates a relationship between them. Summary, Rangdan are the elite shock troops and field commanders, the Slaugth were the technology providers, and the neural shackled slaves are the meat shields.

Evolved enslavers maybe? Just a thought. The scant information about the Rangdan alludes to them having a penchant for enslaving intelligent races and apparently their ships had a kind of techno-organic jellyfish-like aesthetic (check out some art of enslavers and you will understand my meaning here). Maybe these particular enslavers evolved beyond their more primal cousins and created some twisted facsimile of a civilization with numerous proxies and layers of hierarchical castes they could remotely control from a safe distance via more mundane neural technology 'slaved' to powerful enslaver overlords. I mean, the enslavers don't call themselves enslavers, right? It's a term used by Mankind. It's possible that these evolved enslavers began running out of psychic conduits and were forced to adapt. Simple environmental pressures. Next, considering that the Dark Angels and Vylka Fenryka, two legions with a known efficacy against warp-based foes even before the Heresy, were heavily utilized it can be safely assumed that whatever the Rangdan were/are is at least tangentially connected to the warp. The subsequent obliteration of almost all knowledge of the Rangdan may be a very obvious allusion to them being undeniably warp-borne xenos and thus had to be forgotten. The Lion and Russ would both be keen on keeping the entirety of the Xenocides obfuscated so as to prevent anyone from delving too deep. It's possible one of our two mystery primarchs was compromised during the conflict and Russ was required to neutralize them, a somber task indeed. Hell, with this in mind it's possible that in lieu of the involvement of the warp and the very real potential of psychic spoor that the Lion and his Dark Angels were subsequently tasked with giving the 'Emperor's Mercy' to likely untold numbers of Imperial troops thus inflating a likely already massive death-toll at the hands(tentacles?) of the Rangdan. Furthermore, species like the Slaugth and their 'murder-minds' could have simply been a kind of 'clean-up crew' utilized to dispose of anything or anyone the Rangdan deemed beneath them or simply useless as the Slaugth appear to be perfectly suited for the role of corpse removal and pest extermination. Without the tyrannical control of their overlords to keep them in check the Slaugth just kept on doing what they do best and due to the sheer horror of the Slaugth's 'way of life(death?)' any observers of them without any context of their origins would just assume they were the masters from the get-go rather than starting out as the Rangdan's nightmare-fuel garbage disposals... Meh, just a musing of mine after watching this gem of a lore video. Whatever the Rangdan actually were/are, it's probably good they're just relegated to historical myth in lore.

I find this very interesting. As the 2 missing primarchs were originally referred to as : the Lost and the Purged. I still fully believe the carcharadons are the 2nd legion - as they have early great crusade ident codes, and fully match what little information we have on the 2nd primarch. The 2nd primarch was discovered early and it would make sense that "Lost" was killed in a war thats had its records sealed. We know "the purged" was eradicated by the space wolves, presumably do to chaos corruption- I would say its the 11 legion- as like I said, the 2nd was most likely the space sharks. Yes, I know the community is convinced the sharks are a fleet based raven guard successor. However, them resembling raven guard means nothing - raven guard and night lords look nearly identical so I'm not sure why anyone thinks there couldn't be a 3rd distinct group of marines that resemble them. And again - there are small excerpts where we're told about the 2nd primarch. And if you read the carcharadons books carefully after reading those excerpts it becomes very clear that the 2nd primarch shares almost his entire personality with the sharks. I wait with baited breath for the day the SHARKS FINALLY get the respect they deserve.

Since "early great crusade" predates the raven guard meeting they're primarch and being renamed the raven guard. I think it could be pretty simple. Chaos Xenos before "chaos" was really understood or the imperium had organizations to fight it. It was likely that the Rangda were an old Xenos empire that worshipped the dark gods that arose in power quickly, immediately after the birth of Slaanesh that had a jumpstart on humanity because chaos factions can traverse the warp storms present in the galaxy at the time. Similar to the world of Laerin Empire, but perhaps of Tzeentch or Chaos Undivided. They would have resurged in power after the old school Aeldari and Golden Age Humanity lost all their power. I imagine the Rangda seduced one of the Primarchs to chaos and then the first traitor legion, the "Purged", were being fought by the "Forgotten" Primarch and since both were tainted by either Xenos influence or the direct corruption via their chaotic enemies the Emperor had to eliminate the purged entirely and the other was a primarch that represented the forgotten was likely covered up because they had fought chaos which at that time was the biggest imperial secret in existance. This is also supported by the fact that one of the lost Primarchs we are pretty sure was Purged but the other, the 11th Primarch, was speculated to be stored in the black cells deep under the imperial palace as a prisoner. That amount of betrayal and secrecy is most prevalent in that time frame when talking about the powers of the warp. Only Horus, Magnus, the Emperor, and Malcador had a true understanding of the threat of Chaos in that time period and in order to preserve an ignorant imperium that wouldn't feed Chaos power they pulled a "Grey Knights" move. I think it's also pretty likely that the legion of the damned are not the Firehawks Chapter at all but a chapter of black clad space marines that were resummoned like Ferrus Manus was during the imperial webway breach originally designed to represent the Emperors aspect of "Purity" descended from one of the two legions. When the Grey Knights are founded, Malcador goes on a quest to find the most incorruptible of space marines to form the founding members of the Grey Knights chapter. If those individuals were immune to the temptations of chaos even before Malcador altered them with the Emperors gene-seed and were also the original grandmasters of the order, it makes sense that they were Astartes that had their minds wiped but were originally part of the "Forgotten" and the legion of the damned are an uncorrupted remnant of the "Purged".
