What to wear your first time at Sandringham? Let's take a look back at two duchesses approached their first (& second!) Christmas at Sandringham with the Queen. They both were attending for the first time, and each took extremely different paths in style and behavior. It's absolutely fascinating and magnifies the contrast in messaging and personality between two different women. Plus, what last year's Royal Carols: Together at Christmas told the world & you won't BELIEVE what the Meg said about her pregnancy!

As a child, my mother made sure that I wouldn't stick out my tongue, let alone now that I am older. This just goes to show how Meghan lacked good parenting (I am not judging Thomas Markle, I believe he did his best to solo parent all his children, but had her mother been a more present and disciplined mother, i think lots of things would have turned out differently for Harry and Meghan).

Nothing new; Princess Alexandra of Kent recalled how grateful she was for cast-off dresses from Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Alexandra's father was killed early on in WW2 and there was no provision for his widow in the constitution.

Catherine also dresses the kids in hand-me-downs, including the "jumper" sweater Louis wore in his birthday wheelbarrow photo. That jumper was gifted to Catherine after it was worn by the son of 1 of Catherine's friends. I think Charlotte even wore Harry's old shoes, and definitely George's old shoes.

Yes, even Churchill got involved with the matter of the late Duchess of Kent's funding. Prince George was the youngest surviving son of George V and was rather wild in his youth. Marriage in 1934 to Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, a granddaughter of George I, the first King of the Hellenes and first cousin of Prince Phillip really settled him down. He was killed in August 1942 in the Scottish Highlands in a place crash an-route to inspect British Forces in Iceland securing the place on behalf of the locals and the occupied Danish crown against potential German aggression. The Duchess of Kent was left in dire financial straits with three young children, Prince Edward who became Duke of Kent upon his father's death at the age of 6, Princess Alexandra who was 4 and Prince Michael who was a mere 7 weeks old. Due to the fact Prince George 1st Duke of Kent died with an out of date will and economic policies which led to substantial inheritance taxes increased as a way of paying for the Second World War and liable on his estate, including the home Coppins in Buckinghamshire, Princess Marina and her children were left in a sticky wicket. The King, George VI (birth name Prince Albert), the elder brother of Prince George helped them financially and various relatives offered loans, hand-me-downs and to have the children to stay to help with costs. Royalty comes with expectations of largesse that Princess Marina could not meet for some time until her finances were put on more lasting terms after the War. Certainly the challenges seems to have had an affect of Edward and Alexandra's character and work ethic and Princess Marina raised children who understood precisely how lucky they were and wanted to give back. Alexandra was very close to the late Queen and Edward gave up a promising career in the Army to serve in a different way. Prince Michael was so young he was probably affected differently and interestingly one of his godfathers was President Franklin Roosevelt, a choice made to help embed the special relationship during war. Princess Marina was a working member of the Royal Family and was the royal who really embedded the relationship between the Windsors and Wimbledon, presenting the trophies to the champions every year. She died of cancer in Auguest 1968 and was buried at Frogmore alongside her husband after a life filled with drama and purpose, including having to flee Greece at 11 during one of their revolutions and having siblings and cousins overthrown in revolutions and by war elsewhere such as brother-in-law Prince Regent Paul of Yugoslavia who was with her sister Princess Olga, grandparents of the US actor Catherine Oxenberg and the Romanovs to whom she was related through her mother, a granddaughter of Tsar Alexander II.

A vintage clothier once told me that if you aren't sure about hats, go with an accent. I think Catherine wore the forest green outfit at Christmas last year as a sign of respect. The late Queen had only just died and the family were still in mourning, so to wear a bright colour might have been seen to be too overt. The forest green was muted enough to be respectful, but still invoked the spirit of Christmas.

I've always felt Markle was comfortable with being disrespectful to Catherine because Eugenie doesn't appear to like Catherine very much (in my opinion , Eugenie looks like a horribly dressed Thanksgiving turkey, but that's just me) and I could imagine she and Markle "mean-girling" Catherine. Hicks & Brown make the best fedoras ever! She’s rocking the country lady; hunting, shooting and fishing brigade, very, very traditional. I read for Louis' christening there WAS a dress code...every one men and women were asked to wear a certain color, and ole meg showed up in that taupe....pale blue and white...the queen wore blue the ties were blue I think Catherine's mother wore blue, Catherine wore white which I believe she wore white at all the kids' christenings.... meghan decided she was going to get all the attention, from clanging colors to not wearing proper undergarments.

Absolutely!! She will never again this level of attention with anything positive attached to her for the rest of her life. She is trying to turn this level of infamy into something positive and that train has left the station. She might have a bunch of horrible stuff said about her, sure. Great gossip stuff. When Harvey Weinstein got caught being the loser he is everyone watched to see what he might do next like going to court in a walker. Within a few weeks after his permanent incarceration he was forgotten by the media, all the interesting stuff had been completed and no one cared about him. Go ahead Google him! I check periodically and every Google result is at least a couple years old. Meghan is going to try and turn her "brand" which is now "in the toilet" into something edgy that makes people understand and forgive the "rebel" which we all did with Sarah Ferguson, a whole bunch of times. But she is not an utter douche. I think she's fine. But she has to bite it and act normal for years before we were willing to let her be interesting enough to read about. Meghan will never have that happen. She's more of a Weinstein.

I LOVE Catherine's first Christmas outfit. That hat is amazing on her. I also really liked Catherine's outfit from 2022. I think the big hats on her look great. She's always so put together, so prim and proper, and I feel like these big hats are becoming her thing. It's a little step outside her normal. Not everyone can pull off those big hats, but with her face shape and beautiful hair, she looks stunning. I'm hoping to see her try more of these different styles like she wore for Christmas 2022.

As an Australian, Catherine’s olive green outfit reminds me of a couple of iconic Australian items: the Driza-bone all weather coat and the army slouch hat. Her hat and coat aren’t really the same as these, but the overall vibe is the same, somehow. I love that she tries different things, since she has the opportunity to wear outfits that most of us would have no occasion for.

My gut tells me that Zara called William and suggested a show of solidarity with Catherine and - bonus! - it would blast M’s lie out of the water. It's incredible what she can do with fashion. I was inspired by her gold dress that she wore to the bond premiere to wear a gold top (that I went out and bought) and jeans when my son and I went to see the movie at the Imax. We're both huge bond fans. It was just a great day to be British and a bond fan! It was as the pandemic was wrapping up, and we'd been cooped up for months. The feel-good factor was just off the charts, and she did that with her gold dress! I love her and am so proud of her and how she reps Britain. Not a soul in the crowd is wearing any shade of brown either. Citizen Meghan is often the only person among the masses wearing dull, anticlimactic colors and I think she did (and still does this) because she is aware that shades of brown aren't terribly popular and odds are, she will be the standout as the only person wearing those shades of dullness. **Note King Charles is wearing a camel hair coat that he has been wearing for like 40 years so that's more of a choice of comfort vs style so not including him.

I love dress coats, and you don’t see them much any more. I like to see them on men as well. A fine wool coat (like King Charles) with a co-ordinating scarf is the best look for a man. At her (TOW) first Christmas Catherine was farther along in her pregnant than TOW was the next year , and Catherine managed to wear a coat that closed. I don't think anyone mentioned this, but the green coat and debonair hat remind me of Robin Hood, who is a well loved character in British culture, known for wearing forest green. I know there's a hint of military style about the coat but when the hat is added it's Robin Hood and Sherwood forest to me. We had a long running very popular Robin Hood tv series when I was young in England and green always makes us think either of Ireland, the Emerald Isle, or Robin Hood. 😊 No matter what it's a gorgeous look on Catherine.

Regarding the Xmas out. If the feather is quail, it seems a nod to the quail shoot that occurs on the estate during the holiday. The earrings look like the metallic framed pouch worn by the bagpiper. The green shade another nod to the landscape.

I gifted myself the earrings Catherine was wearing together with the knitted vest at the 50.18 mark. They are the SHYLA Rosalia 22ct yellow gold-plated sterling-silver and freshwater pearl earrings and look divine on. They cost £57 at Selfridges and are worth every penny. This was the first time I have purchased anything a Royal has worn and I am tickled pink.

I liked when the small platform heels were popular. I don't remember when they stopped making as many stilletos with a bit of a platform in the front (maybe 10 years ago?) but I'm terrible at walking in heels and that small platform helped me. My favorite heels have a bit of a thicker heel because I walk on the outsides of my feet/heels and I trip over myself in 👠. Hahah, I can't believe I'm in my 30s and still can't walk in heels lmao. I loved Catherine's plaid coat and her block heels with that outfit!! I love plaid. ❤ Even Catherine's cute fuzzy hat was adorable lol. 43:15 I love this whole outfit! She looks loke a modern Carmen San Diego! The hat was great and the coat was so unique! It's such an interesting outfit!

Doria was also invited to Sandringham for the first Christmas. The Middletons have NEVER been invited to Sandringham for Christmas.....EVER. (Now their other children have been married and had children, so i can understand it now, but there were years when the Middletons could have been invited.)

Agreed but the Middleton's have each other, a beautiful home and two other children in the UK neither of which Doria has. It seems good manners at the very least that the family should invite her to see her only child at Christmas. None of them were invited to Sandringham....Carole and Hubby Middleton were NEVER invited .....and Megs was invited when she was engaged.....Kate wasn't invited fro Christmas til after she was married. Definitely NOT sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.....the star was treated like dirt, while Megs was given every advantage. Yet Kate has stood up for the crown is spite of the clear discriminatioin. Hope the Royals learned from that....

@@kittyfan Catherine declined an invitation for Christmas at Sandringham once they were engaged as she chose to spend her last ' single ' Christmas with her own family. Most divorced or step families don't spend Christmas Day together and it's incumbent on us to make the shitty choice of letting one parent down by choosing the other. Catherine and parents thankfully are not in that position. Meghan's father has two other children who could have invited him for the holidays and her mother dkesn'ty, Meghan is an only child. The RF have manners and extended an invitation to Doria so she could be with her only daughter on Christmas Day which seems the right thing to do in the circumstances. Rather like Fergie being annually invited to stay at Wood House on the estate so she could see her daughters on Christmas Day. The family are old fashioned and observe etiquette but they don't have a heart of stone.despkte what Harry would like you to believe.

I love all of Princess Catherine’s looks. The forest green coat and the extra pizzazz of the earrings and hat really is appropriate for a special occasion. The fact that the green coat is a rewear makes me love her even more. Maybe she is branching out with hats and making them a signature look for her.
