"By myself I'd be in Árdaí Chuain
Where the mountains stand away
Oh 'tis there I'd let the Sundays go
In the Cuckoo's Lair abower the bay
Agus och, och Éire 'lig is ó
Éire londubh is ó
And the Quiet Land o' Erin
Oh my heart is weary all alone
And it sends a lonely cry
To the land that sings beyond my dreams
And the lonely Sundays pass me by
Agus och, och Éire 'lig is ó
Éire londubh is ó
And the Quiet Land o' Erin
Oh I'd ravel back the twisted years
In the bitter wasted wind
If the God above would let me lie
In the quiet glades abower the whin
Agus och, och Éire 'lig is ó
Éire londubh is ó
And the Quiet Land o' Erin"

Oh my god. This is probably one of the most beautiful Irish songs sang by a non Irish person. I’ve known of Sandy for years and Fairport, saw Richard Thompson in 2019, amazing show, but just bought two Sandy albums, i have to know more about her, from what i hear she was very troubled, which kind of comes across in her songs, but boy did she turn it into something positive. I’m a big fan of women singers, but not many can do it like her, maybe Joan Baez, Jaqui McShee, Kate Pierson. I try not to listen to her every day, i feel I’ll spoil it for myself. I like to listen to her when basically, it’s quiet in Ireland, when all the crowds are asleep and its not quite dark but not daytime either.

Dave Swarbrick loved Sandy until his death. He said in an interview he looked forward to hearing her unmistakable footsteps coming up his garden path. They cared for each other and she cared for others. He was left heartbroken although he married.

Sorry Joe, but to my ears the background hiss, crackle & Theremin-like warblings & wobblings intrude like an alien spaceship landing to a 1950s soundtrack. Thankfully it wasn't recorded on wax cylinder to make it sound even older. Apart from this, I haven't heard this traditional song sung more beautifully, so I am grateful it was recorded.

With good headphones I hear most things that a human can hear and it isn't the result of imagination. When I go to folk gigs the volume is often cranked so high, for the deafest member of the audience in the back row, the sound distorts and my hearing is so acute that this approaches pain level and I have to wear earplugs or leave.

absolutely beautiful ! What a waste of such a talent she was taken from us so young . This tune was used by the Horslips on the unfortunate cup of tea album as the instrumental " the snakes farewell to the emerald isle " ( the track Pat Kenny played on Radio Eireann in 75 just after announcing that Eamon Devalera had just passed away ..................................ouch !)

What a wonderful memory to always hold close to your heart - of sitting next to Sandy. What songs would she sing at Half Moon? Was she there with any members of Fairport in those days or would she just show up alone? I think I read she lived in the area and she would walk to the club or take the bus to this club - but not sure if that is accurate information.

@Ronnie Barretta... I think that "usagoodbyeisayhello" in his “Soviet” comment, probably means diktats coming from Brussels and the fact that Irish budgets have to be Okayed by Berlin etc. The 2011 Irish census revealed that 25% of babies were born to foreign born mothers. My niece is a teacher in a Dublin primary school that has 37 different nationalities. Of course, an injection of new blood is a good thing, just so long as the indigenous population doesn’t get swamped

patrickspoint So true. Sinn Fein after all the blood shed and suffering, seems not to care a hoot. Beyond human understanding, such treason. Now little Greece stands at the crossroads. Their president made a humble and noble speech calling on his people to vote no to the decadent complacent Germans and patronising Eurotechnocrats. If Greece votes yes because of the pistol pointed at their heads, I will despair. Who else will be left to speak in the name of demcoracy, honour, self respect and love of one's land?
