Growing up in Southern California, I was a huge Dodgers fan. My dad took me to games at both the Colosseum and Chavez Ravine. So many fans had their radios, listening to Vin call the game. Nights during baseball season, I had my radio next to my bed, listening to Vin's mellifluous voice. “Good evening, wherever you are”, one of his trademark phrases. Vin didn’t just announce, he entertained. He didn’t detract from the game, he embellished. He knew when to talk, and he knew when to be quiet. His magnificent timing was never better than in Sandy's no hitter, when in the ninth inning he simply called the time, the outs, and the count, knowing history was being made. Masterful. Best sports announcer ever.

Vin Scully taught me to be a baseball fan rather than just a Dodger fan. More importantly he taught me how words and the integrity and beauty of their use could paint pictures, even change lives. I began listening to Mr. Scully in 1958 when I was nine years old. We didn't get to see the Dodgers much on TV but I'm sure he showed me how imagination can trump television. Right there on my cheesy AM radio. Koufax and Scully, the very best by far in their fields. Good men excelled because they were good.

Baby Boomer & lifelong N.Y. YANKEES fan here. Nice tribute to the great Vin Scully by the greatest pitcher I ever saw, Sandy Koufax. As a kid growing up in the very late 50s & 60s I got to see some of the greatest baseball players. If I were starting a baseball team my first pick would be Sandy Koufax. He was the best. And this is from someone whose favourite all time player was the great #7, Mickey Mantle.

I'm also a baby boomer, from Toronto, growing up in an era before we had a major league team. For some reason, I ended up watching the LA Dodgers, specifically Sandy Koufax. When he retired, I lost all interest in baseball until we got the Blue Jays. People of my generation still talk about his refusal to pitch on Yom Kippur. A class act!

Two of the greatest acts ever. Vin and Sandy. I've been a lifelong Dodger fan and I appreciate both. I saw a Koufax no hitter and for years and years fell asleep listening to Vin call games. My sons also had the great fortune to listen to Vin. Thank you both...you were both amazing.

Notice how Koufax's speech was all about Vin -- never mentioned himself once except to say how nervous he was -- and that he was glad to be Vin's friend. Nothing about "Vin calling all my no-hitters" or "Vin calling my World Series wins." Class all the way.

Saul Wisnia agreed, 90% of players today would have bragged about themselves. That's whats wrong with the game right now is everyone's at each others throats and cocky. I think people in general back then were just nicer people, really begs the question as to where things went wrong.

Make that 20 games, possibly 25, and I'm sure he (Koufax) could throw a no hitter or two. At least he got to play for the hometown Dodgers for three seasons. Sandy Koufax, the greatest pitcher in Brooklyn/LA Dodger history, and the last surviving former player to have played for the Dodgers while the team was calling Ebbets Field home, likewise with Willie Mays and the New York Giants.

About ten years after he retired he was at a fantasy camp so loud mouth needled Koufax when he was on the mound about whether he had anything left.
