Neither is in any way interesting. Both are duds using commodity everything. No EV with poor efficiency matters or contains any worthwhile technology. The only interesting vehicle may be the new rav4 plugin hybrid coming out soon. They claim instant torque and 5.8s which is really fast. If it performs like that, it will feel like an EV and be real competition to the Y because it doesn't need charging away from home.

They just need to make sure they follow or beat Tesla's update model and don't make the naiive mistakes all the other competitors do and ensure that their cars are built to age. All these "Tesla killers" start with a design that beats a current Tesla, but by the time they hit production they're already behind due to refreshes and software updates and lag further and further behind with each patch. They need to factor in FSD, supercharging networks, and where these things will be 2-5 years from today and either go all in to compete in those areas or go all in on being more affordable options.

At 30:30 the question comes up about cost, and whether 70% of the model 3 parts got reused. Sandy said that he didn't see that in his teardown, compared to his model 3 teardown, but the model 3 he's using as reference was older (a year?) than the model Y he's tearing down now. It may very well be that the model 3 has also been updated with these improvements, so that if Sandy tore a brand new 3 down he might find more commonality with the parts.

Distributed hydrogen production at fuelling stations can serve these vehicles (a small electrolysis plant at each fuel station making their own hydrogen), especially if the majority of vehicles are pure Battery electric vehicles and the electricity is also produced from excess solar/wind farm generation on site. As someone who extensive dealing(25yrs>) with body repairing Tesla’s and their high end German and Italian competitors, I can say their vehicle quality & after sales support was alarmingly poor. The quality of plastic replacement parts- particularly facias(bumpers) was so bad they looked like aftermarket / copy parts at best. We would often repair old fascia as new replacement one would arrive requiring hours of high building and spot repairs. Parts supply was always holding up key to key times. If customers Model# needed new door it would be supplied from Tilburg (5days shipping) even if one of my local SC had stock - we would have to prompt customer to complain to Tesla about parts delay. Some new vehicles looked like final stage QC / snagging was lacking or purposely left to dealer / customer sort issue between them. Our paint finishes caused original factory poor finish to be highlighted - orange peeling against nice fresh painted / polished glass like panel would frequently cause 4 way arguments customer x repairer x Tesla x insurance company. Panel gaps... No two cars had same specs. No chance gap gauges were in use. They did innovative and tech stuff amazingly well but old coach building and wet work was miles off the pace.

Given Sandy’s knowledge and love of trucks, helping Tesla on design and quality vs after tear down could be very valuable to Tesla pre-cybertruck production

I'd suggest looking at Hyundai Kona too. It seems very efficient in terms of watt hours per mile so would love to hear details as to why.

Regarding cost and similar parts: It is possible that the later model 3 is more in common than the Y than the early model 3 that Munro broke down. Perhaps the newer parts developed in the Model Y is going to find its way to the model 3 too.

I'd love to see a tear-down of the 2020 Corvette. Be great to know how GM's managed to get 90% of the performance of a European super-car for a quarter of the cost.

It is not a secret at all: by using a monster 6.2 l V8 with no regard for a fuel consumption.

Great job in this interview with Sandy! Maybe this was mentioned, but a teardown of the Rivain R1T and the Lordstown Endurance in the future would be great for Munro to do.

Please ask why wheel rim manufacturers don't make left and right side wheels when they're radially asymmetrical. One side of the vehicle always looks wrong as they spin in opposite directions.

Hello Munro, my suggestion for the next vehicle that's affordable to break down is the Hyundai Kano EV. I'm interested in how Hyundai manages getting so much kwh per mile. I live where there's no Tesla dealership and the Kano EV is the best kwh per mile that I can get my hands on. Thank you Mitchell & Munro for creating this video, it's great to learn how engineers think and how reverse engineering works.

What was the exact month and year Sandy broke down the model 3 and do you think they have improved on the model 3?

I would like to buy one battery cell, just a souvenir. Will that be available?

I'd like to see some more detailed speculation on the construction of the Cybertruck, weight, strength, potential for other body types, (van, and wagon), as well as more about the manufacturing costs compared to conventional truck construction.

Fuel cell car breakdown would be awesome.... I would love to see the truck comparisons also...... Also, just doing a comparison in "general" about what Japan is doing for longevity (such as toyota's and honda') vs american cars like dodge and chevy and why the imports tend to last 100k miles more or better---- Seeing exactly what the difference is would be great.

Shocking to hear that Tesla’s newest model is the best. When does that ever happen?
