I always liked this version of Lamont better. His constant sarcasm,and back in forth with Fred was always hilarious to me. I heard a rumor they softened his character up in the later years, because some of the fans of the show were complaining his character was too disrespectful to his father on the show,and they thought it was a bad portrayal of a father son relationship.

Well, the show became boring after his character became nicer. The essence of the show was the conflict between the two of them but the both of them still needing each other.

I didn’t particularly care for Lamont in the earlier shows. Back in the day, fans wrote in and complained about the way Lamont treated Fred. He would call him names, push him, yell at him, he was greedy, selfish etc. As years went on, they softened Lamont’s character. Which made the father/son relationship more believable. He wasn’t very likable in the earlier episodes.

@ghanasoul2 жыл бұрын
@@rickyv7757 True, that was the original premise. It was a remake of the British sitcom “Steptoe and Son”. In the earlier shows, they pretty much took the scripts from the original show and put them on “Sanford”. However, it would’ve never sustained with Redd and Demond’s characters bickering for 5 seasons. The characters had to evolve in order for the viewers to continue to want to watch them. It made the characters more vulnerable and believable when they became closer. It made the show universal too.
@rickyv77572 жыл бұрын
@@ghanasoul you do need character progression however the best comedic scenes and episodes are when the two were at odds with each other. The show became dull later on in the final couple of seasons when lamont became mellow and passive. As for Lamont being mean towards fred, that seems like a very one-sided way of looking at things and shows people may just have favored Redd Foxx more. While Lamont was rude and disrespectful, fred degraded lamont and sabatoged him multiple times. But the idea was to highlight their dysfunctional relationship but still show that had a strong loving bond despite it all. So you had to have the bickering and the fighting at some point, although to your point, both characters needed to grow over time.
