When you can hate a villain so much and then feel sad that they died (Light Yagami is another example of this), you know it's good writing. In the end, he wasn't evil like Deok-su (the gangster), Sang-woo was just a human trying to survive.

And at the very end of it all, he can't believe that Gi-Hun would throw it all away just to let him live. He can't live with what he's done if he has no prize to show for it, but he realized at this point that he couldn't kill his friend. So he killed himself to give Gi-Hun the prize and free himself from his sins...

Gi-Hun is one of the most likable characters I have ever seen. And it is precisely because we see him at his worst and at his best. At the begining of the show, he is a pathethic selfish manchild whose only redeemable quality is that he wants to be a good father. Sang-Woo on the other side, looks like a more decent person. A great student turned into a succesfull and mature businessman who also seem to care about others (like the dude from Pakistan). ...but then the Game puts both of them through inhuman physical amd mental torture, which turns them into beasts who want to keep playing despite how horrible things are getting. Yet, despite all of that, at the end, Gi-Hun doesnt let that take his humanity away. Because despite all of his pain and despite how hopeless things seem, at the end... he is still a good man. While his succesfull friend on the other hand, showed that his deepest and truest self is a selfish and cruel person. And thats they key point: When you show a very flawed character, then his virtues shine even brighter. Because no person is all light or all darkness, yet there is nothing better than fighting for making the best part of you be the one that is in control.

You cannot establish someone with the attribute "cruel" when the situation is life and death, between oneself, and STRANGER people. "Selfish" may be better fitting, but in this case don't you think it is warranted? It's a fundamental characteristic of human nature Also you seem to be forgetting that the person you called cruel, ultimately chose to brutally end his life, despite given the choice to stay alive (in exchange for the prize money to be taken away from the rightful winner). This only increased my insecurity and fear during my teenage years and contributed to me not learning how to propertly socialize. It is true that in your own little world you feel comfortable and safe, but you miss the most important thing in life: human relationships. Even if you are "different" it is worth the effort.
