Thank you. I have an 8 month old long hair. I'm still figuring it out. He's deaf, so I don't have to worry about the sound bothering him, but he has so much energy and I don't have a helper. I swear, he's impossible to wear out. Hopefully this will get easier as he gets older.

Thank you for sharing. The groomer I took my old girl too left town and the other groomers are so expensive, so I've decided to try it myself. It didn't even occur to me that the cat could have a positive experience with the clippers. This will be very helpful - thanks again!

Great video. Seems like it's less about getting the right clipper technique, and more about getting the cat in the right frame of mind to be groomed. Looking forward to getting my kitty used to the clippers! Thanks!

Beautiful Cats; Such a loving technique and *so essential* for long haired kitties! One comment for those new to clipping however is do NOT make the ball toy out of clippings from the sanitary area. Likely loaded with "residue" you do *not* want rolling around on your floors. From tummy and rest of body is fine. I'm only commenting on this because this video is specifically about sanitary clipping. IF you have 1st bathed the cat this may not apply.

Great point and thanks for sharing! We only use the finest virgin belly wool to make our toys ;-) and it's important to make them big enough to not become choking hazards.

Using a baby blanket and rolling the kitty up like a burrito can help too. You can work on the shaving if their hind end is hanging out of the blanket. Feliway is a product can help calm their nerves. This is what my cat's Vet does.

Good question! It's best to minimize stress in the environment for all animals, but cats who are not used to dogs REALLY don't do well if there is barking etc. Think of trying to provide more of a spa feel, where everyone speaks in low and calm voices and you minimize loud noise. If you do these things, you may have a chance to connect with the cat, which admittedly is difficult to do without regular interaction. I have a very timid rescue cat who responds well to new people who sit quietly on the floor and wave his favorite Da Bird wand around until the other cats start playing and then he comes out. It also can help if they have a more confident buddy with them. You really need to understand cats and cat behaviour to groom them. It can be physically dangerous as well. Good luck!

Can clippers get mats out too?
@annefair
@annefair 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, easily in most cases! Be sure to keep the skin flat in the area you are clipping and if it is over a less than flat surface, you can often slide the skin to an are that allows you to get the area spread over a flat surface.

Does anyone know a shaver they could recommend that would be safe to use on tight,hard,low {tight to the skin} hair mats that are on a cat's butt ? My cat has been having issues with this for the first time in her life, starting last year. I take her to the Vet every few months. She's OK with it and behaves, but hates the car rides. I'm tired of hauling her around. But the skin is delicate on a kitty's butt and I need the best sort of shaver that won't hurt her but can take off the tightest, hard and close to the skin kind of hair mats. I'm not talking about mats that you can easily clip with scissors, these are "nightmare" kind of hair mats. I give her Cosequin, which has obviously helped her feel much better {she's getting old}, but it hasn't helped her to groom herself as well as she used to.

Silly question...newbie here. Did you give your cat a hygienic cut WITHOUT having to turn on the clippers ? I would like to know, before purchasing a clipper, if this is possible. I don't need to shave my cat, just need to give her a hygienic cut. I never heard the clippers in your video while you were shaving their rears. Other people's videos show them shaving the rear with the clippers "on", which is inherently more stressful for an amateur.
@annefair
@annefair 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Royal Blue. While it IS possible to trim fur without clippers (using scissors), it is not possible with clippers which are not on. For that segment I removed the audio, possibly due to some background noise or vocals that would interfere with the voiceover. The point of the video is to show how to de-stress the clipping process. My cats are not stressed by it anymore.

They come running? That could be really handy in an emergency situation. Just turn them on give treats & shove in carrier. Or in my case put on harnesses first if there's time.
@annefair
@annefair 4 жыл бұрын
Good point! The problem is maintaining YOUR calm in an emergency too, otherwise they freak out. Anyone who has ever tried to get a carrier out once or twice a year for vet visits and get the cat IN can relate!
@Nirrrina
@Nirrrina 4 жыл бұрын
@@annefair True. Might be best to routinely practice getting them in and out of the carrier. Make it fun for them by rewarding them with a special carrier only treat. As soon as they go in you feed them a treat. Then close the door and while praising them for being so good you feed more treats through the bars. Then you let them out after a minute or two and feed a couple more treats while praising them and giving a good scratch. If you're really ambitious you could have them go in and out to get treats a few times in a row. You might also occasionally take them for a fun practice car ride. Where they get praised and again fed a special carrier only treat. So they associate the carrier with good things. Just drive around the block the first time and then work you're way to a longer drive. Eventually the cat should adjust and start enjoying it some. Especially if you use really really good treats they only get then. Like pieces of chicken or other meat. I'd recommend fixing a bit with no seasoning and keeping extra frozen just for this. Then you can quickly thaw a bit out for them. If you really want something they love. You can always try a bit of very fresh raw meat for them. But only if the vet says it's ok for a strong healthy cat.

@@annefair Leave a carrier out at all times with a towel in it. They'll go in and out at their leisure and won't associate it with just a vet trip.
