Millions of people have no option but to mix on headphones. Because they live in apartments. When I used to live in an apartment, every time I use my monitors, the cops were called. After around 7 months of that nonsense, I purchased my first Condo. And I got some complaints every once in a while. And I wasn't even that loud. A couple of years after that, I purchase my first actual house. No complaints since. The point I am trying to make is, people have no choice to use headphones. But even those people that are stuck in apartments, will say monitors, because they really want to mix on monitors instead of doing what they are doing now, which is mixing on headphones. Just wanted to point that out. 🥰

I approach audio mixing with the idea of hearing as close to what the end user will experience as possible so I can influence/control that sound in the final musical product. If every listening situation is different and so many people listen to the sounds on their head phones, I would like to hear a rational, critically thought argument, for why some people prefer monitors.

Should have given everybody an option "C," mixing on BOTH headphones and studio monitors. SO many people consume their music on headphones or earbuds today that I think you really need to be constantly referencing that as you mix. Plus, there are a lot of effects that are way more intense when you're listening to headphones, so it's really good to be aware of that as you mix. Both is better than either - or.

1:40 I never really mixed on monitors because my room was so poor for it, being a box bedroom, but at university weve got some great studios with great ATC monitors, the exact model im forgetting. Ive used my beyerdynamic 900 pro x for a few years and love them for mixing anywhere, anytime, and having a consistent sound, but monitors are far better for the portrayal of width and depth when mixing than open back headphones in my opinion :)
