Excellent work Jay and fantastic call about how the simple stuff is so good! For me the cups and balls has it all. Appearance of multiples under one cup, some vanishing to other cups, a wand penetrating through the bottom of a cup, and the loads at the end for appearances.....has it all for me. These moments in magic are the best. Basic sleights, items people are familiar with. I feel a lot of people get stuck or get too comfortable with cards and this is always something simple you can do even with a straw and a coin. I find myself getting coffee a lot so use what’s around you normally. Great stuff Jay! Learned a lot of my coin work from you!

I love a vanish that takes place in a contained space - like inside a balled up piece of paper because there is an element of isolation and clarity in the vanish. There is a sense of "It happened then and there". That is why I love the coin vanish inside a folded piece of paper.

Great trick! I do something like it as an opener to a signed coin routine... A coin is signed and I return the marker to my jacket pocket. After a false transfer I reach in my jacket to retrieve the marker to use as a makeshift magic wand and deposit the coin into my upper sleeve. After the vanish my left arm drops to my side, reloading the coin into my cupped hand, ready to reappear with another tap if the "wand". I love transpositions. My favorite is a very clean effect with two signed cards that exchange themselves across a room.

I think vanishes are the most magical. The fact that you can make something disappear ( especially up close ) is absolutely mind boggling. Even when I know how it’s done it still blows my mind. Coin magic is my favorite for that reason

One of the most magical things I can think of is the "originality" of the magician performing the tricks. We have all seen pretty much the same tricks or illusions performed by many magicians, or a variation of those tricks. But what is "magical" to me is an all-new trick that NO OTHER magician performs that is unique and original that no one has ever seen before. It is hard to fool the most learned of magicians and others who have a strong magical background. But when even they are fooled and can't figure out how the heck the trick or illusion is done, that's the closest to real magic there is in a magicians performance.

I think disappearing something large is the most magical effect, because it takes a bigger setup and hopefully makes the impossible seem possible at least for a few seconds. That is why I loved your CN Tower vanish.

I think the most magical is a transformation, and even more if you do it casually without even saying that something happened. Like "Hey so i'm gonna use a coin, oh actually let's use a pen" and go on and just wait for them to notice that something just happened. I really like this effect.

Honestly, I feel like making something appear when it's completely unexpected is the most magical thing ever. This principal can be in any form, like card magic for example. Even an acaan, or something as simple as an ambitious card routine. Having that card appear where the spectator least expects it, man there's nothing quite like seeing their faces when that moment happens. Sponge balls, cards, coins, I could go on and on. No matter how many times a magician performs it, it makes them feel so happy and proud to make the spectator have that feeling of wonder and astonishment when they see something appear out of nowhere. Seeing their eyes light up and the smiles on their faces makes it all worth it. Transformations and reappearances are great too of course, but to me, there's nothing like that first appearance out of nowhere that makes a spectator truly believe in magic, even for a moment.

I remember seeing that little red scarf being pushed into the hand of a magician and to my amazement it disappeared in a snap only to reappear just as magical. I like tricks where you kind of know how it's done like sleights but you could never do it yourself but then they add a vanish that totally blows your mind and then you have to rewind to try & work it out!

Hands down transformation effects are the most powerful and coolest simple effect in my experience. Even something as simple as 2 card monte, swapping the ace of hearts and diamonds to the ace of spades/clubs or to (as I like to do it personally) turn them into a king/queen of spades, the looks on people’s faces is always incredible, especially when it’s way easier to do than tricks like the devils elevator, or other tricks that lean heavier into sleight of hand.

For me it's levitation. It's fairly easy to imagine how something transforms, vanishes, even appears. But when you see it floating before your eyes, defying gravity, you almost wish it'd be true. I was training to be a pilot in the Israeli airforce years ago and the fact that human figured out how to work with gravity in order to fly is nothing short of magical.

I don't know if you will read this, but in my opinion the most magical trick is levitation. Why? well with vanishing tricks, reappearance and phasing, people will think its sleight of hand yadeyadeyade, cause its in your hand and its so easy to obstruct their vision over the item. At the other hand levitation is not a trick you see everyday and its kinda tricky to do, and if it goes well it gives some serious reactions. One trick I really liked and you probably know about it , which was for the first time demonstrated to me by Rich Ferguson , it was that trick where you wear a long coat and you use some props and a bit of body movement to make it so your head falls into your hand. It's really cool when people do it and it even got few of people scared, so its a really nice trick to do

I think the best magic is Luck! A prediction or a mindreading effect with Luck just seems unexplainable for both the performer and the audiences. It's the most astonishing effect i ever performed so far.

I'm in India right now and I've been very inspired here by the way the traditional magicians here (called jaadugars in Hindi) make a production into something truly magical and incredible. One example is the mango tree production, where a dried seed turns into a leafy, fruit-bearing mango tree. Another example is the close-up and surrounded production of three doves. Seriously, just take a second to imagine those things, and even to try and imagine how they could be done. That is iconically amazing magic, and it's now wonder that even today many people here get confused about the line between magicians and yogi-like people who are considered to have real magical powers.

I think that Fir the lay mind levitations seem the most magical, I use to do "Wonderbar" (do you remember that one Jay), I would get work referrals and the new client would say "They tell me you do an effect where you make a metal bar float around the room" ... LOL if you know it Jay you know it doesn't do that, but that's how the spectators remember it ... I learned sleeving from Rocko who was one of the smoothest sleevers I have known ... I think an appearance is the most magical. I believe most people want something to appear out of nothing because when nothing turns to something they usually don’t know what that something is. This adds another level of mystery and amazement. Think about it... ask anyone what they would do with magic powers and many of them would say they want to make something appear (money, a car, house, pet, etc).

I'm partial to transformations, simply because it ends to catch people off guard. I love a good mindreading trick. this is the kind of effect that spectators can actually debate whether or not it actually happened and they do the work to suspend the belief long after you've left. Amy believes in psychics and states her case, but Chris doesn't and they debate the validity of what you did with a unique perspective. Regardless, you showed them something unbelievable.

Transposition is probably the most magical to me. I think the reason is the magician is usually so far ahead that there is often NO action, only a reveal. That seems to be the most truly magical. Any time you're moving or performing any action of any kind, there is at least a Planck"s volume worth of possible doubt. But, when you're so far ahead that they can turn the card over, or they can lift the cup...BOOM! That's MAGIC!

On first thought, I‘d say that the strongest trick is mentalism (the idea of reading someone‘s mind). But after a while of thinking about this, I realized that I think those aren‘t quite as strong as the tricks which play with open blindness. That stuff, when for example do a trick and suddenly hold your glasses in your hands, which you wore a second ago. The principle of giving the spectator the possibility to see a change of situation is amazing.

For me, levitation is the most magical. The idea of being able to fly or levitate is the most magical thing that I would want to be able to do.

Penetration is the one. For any vanish/appearance or transformation it's easy to assume that it was a switch of some kind. You don't need to be a magician to understand intuitively what just happened. But for levitation and penetration, it's harder to explain. For levitation, the thought goes to stings of some kind. The spectator doesn't need to be correct, it just provides a possible explanation. But Penetration doesn't have that first intuitive thought. And that makes it much more magic since you don't have that intuitive idea of how it's done.

The first trick that really caught my attention was the simple retention vanish. I remember seeing it done when I was a young kid, and it seemed like pure magic. I loved the big, elaborate illusions of Paul Daniels (my childhood hero) and David Copperfield, but it was the vanish that made me think “If I could learn to do that, then I’d be a REAL magician.”
