Sans in phase 1 when he uses Gaster's Mask he loses consciousness and is controlled by the mask with one single goal to kill SMX. That's why he didn't show characteristics or didn't talk at all. Also his main abilities are Justice (27:54) when you said bounce lol and Perseverance (that ties up)

Also something you probably didn't understand is that smx can die he just has to get rid of all of his blood the demons cant really die but smx can and when smx dies they die along with him, so the fighing is important so smx can lose blood to stop regenerating.

Also something you kinda didn't really understand was the whole fight yes because the viewers but if sans kills smx and destroyed his body he would have won instantly fightig dragging out so log because of regen but when he was Incased in the ice and he was charging up the beam smx was really going to die since he wasnt in sans universe meaning no game over and after geting his head lasered off sans would incase his body in ice fully making him actually die, also when he ran out of blood sans could've killed him but was shocked from the world dying and didn't take the chance
