サンサーンスの交響曲第3番、は、金管楽器を演奏する演奏者たちに、高度な演奏技術が要求される楽曲で、弦楽器の細かく変動する分散和音、と、パイプオルガンのペダル音、の二つの効果、で、金管楽器のサウンド、を、輝くような音に変える方法に依る、科学的な音楽である。

ベルリン・フィルの音、サン=サーンスにすごくマッチしていますね。今まではフランスのオケでばかり聴いていたので新鮮に感じました。

This was rated top recording of this great piece by BBC Radio 3's Building a Library around 2000, beating other famous performances like Barenboim/ Chicago SO/ Litaize and Dutoit/ Montreal SO/ Hurford. Obviously subjective, but it is certainly a very fine performance, with the "Berlin sound". The organ has suitable depth and balance and makes a fine sound at the beginning and end of the finale. The best recordings tend to have the edge over live performances because it is so difficult to balance the organ against the orchestra; most concert hall organs don't quite produce enough impact at the climaxes.
