I've seen Spanish Moss all over East Texas but not quite like what I witnessed at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. It hangs and sways from the tree branches creating a dream world for you to explore. This video was actually recorded in late winter of 2021 (just before the big freeze), but with fall coming this part of Texas will be an ideal place to explore in the near future.

Years ago I had a job where I stayed at a hotel in McAllen and worked at a factory in Reynosa a couple of times a year. I always found a chance to hike at Santa Ana if I could.

There's another cemetery just outside of the refuge. It's called Brewster's cemetery. It's a little hidden treasure.

The Spanish inscription at 7:05 reads, "With a date of 5 August 1876 here lie the ashes of Mr. Cristoval Leal. He passed away at 43 years of age leaving behind fond memories as a good husband and loyal citizen. Mrs. Rafaela Treviño, loyal wife, consecrates them to his memory. R.I.P." Interesting features are the archaic spelling of "llacen" [lie, as in "here lie"], which today would be spelled "yacen," the several (also archaic) digraph versions of "E" to make "el" [the] or "de" [of], and the abbreviation "D.E.P." [Descansa En Paz], which literally translates to "rest in peace." I also am somewhat surprised that cremation was a thing in 1876 Catholicism. I thought it was forbidden until much more recently than that.

It costs lots of money to be buried. There may have been a plague going on back then in the area too

I've been on some hikes around this country and I left out Texas, Florida and the Great plains like Is Nebraska and Kansas to name two. The reason is because of the lack of hiking in those states. So don't call it hiking when it's more like a Sunday walk. Because that's all Texas has are walks... NO hiking.

How close are you to Del Rio?? You're pretty close to the border... Be careful... Can you carry at a state park during a BORDER INVASION??

Native San Antonian here, we love Ft Clark area outside of Del Rio. Love Del Rio too but with 20000 landing all at once - turns us off as far as visiting the area as a serene get away. I feel for the environment (human waste) and native Texans from the area. I myself am Mexican American many generations fam came over with Spanish. Insane 20000 COME AT ONCE, & from overseas too!

You can in Texas state parks. Same rules as elsewhere in Texas. This is a National Wildlife Refuge and you can carry there too except inside buildings.
