I know that this is an e-Bike commercial, but the coolest part of this is legal trail building in California. It’s amazing what happens when local governments support what the community wants and opens their eyes to the economic impact of mountain biking.

Mike L Booblay if the trails are in a smaller area, several tickets from rangers will spread by word throughout the community While I think e bikes should be allowed on all trails, e bikes do allow riders to ride a single trail a lot more (ex: 4-1 in the same time), which means the trails the volunteers work on are hammered and destroyed faster. I personally don’t mind but it seems like the governments don’t like doing more than the bare minimum of work/putting money in the trails.

Almost as much fun as a moto. Wanna have a great e-ride? out of town up 1st, up 2nd to the bridge, and back down 3rd to town, all in about 2 hours. Or you could do that AND chimney rock all in one day!!! Or howa bout out and back on North Yuba faster than you've ever imagined?? Either way, ebikes are here to stay and they open the world around D-ville to EVERYONE!! Remember, motos ruled the roost here till them dang MTBR's came in and joined the party. We are lucky all 3 disciplines are allowed and that everyone gets along. Haters gonna hate, but it won't stick when we are riding our ego busters by them. Enjoy your ride, whatever it may be. Considering I threw up at the top of the climb at the Downieville Classic last year, and still got second in beginner class, I can see how this would make sense up there. I think a better way to frame it is that there are not enough riders willing or able to take on these climbs to reach these descents, but E-bikes open it to enough riders to make it commercially successful and help rebuild the area. I also attended and worked at a summer camp in this area and the economy was really bad, so anything that helps is good. Taking an E-bike is better than a car shuttle too, which is what most riders do in Downieville. Interesting the shuttle guy is now pushing E-bikes and not seeing them as competition!

This thought of being able to ride longer & farther is exactly why there is multiple decades of dirt bike riders enjoying rural trails. Are these rides suitable for a cross country bike or do I really need something with more slack angle?
@8AFatTurtle84 жыл бұрын
I've been riding there for over a decade, many of those first years on 100 to 120 mm xc bikes. This was before the dropper seatpost was everywhere too. I've also done it on long-travel, slack bikes. If you are a good rider with bike handling skills, you will be fine on your xc bike and have much more fun. With the word "downhill" getting thrown around so much people forget that you have to pedal up most of the day. On slack, long travel bikes and their wandering front ends, that is not that fun. Yes, there are rocks, but you're not hucking ten foot drops, you're just riding over rocks. I've never bottomed out or had trouble with short travel suspension. On top of that, if you do have a dropper post for the occasional, really steep section, drop the post and you're now on a slack bike. No problem. Go there and have fun.

It might be a good idea for around Downieville, but MOST places don't have 1000's of miles of unridden trails closeby. Most places have a much more limited amount of trails and e-bikes unless they are only allowed to be used on trails that currently allow for MOTORIZED vehicles, which it is (no matter how much you pedal in eco-mode) then the sanctity the comes with mountains will be gone, or seriously minimized, which I think is a huge bummer. Thankfully I live in OR and we have already these laws on the books.

Thanks for your opinion as we're all entitled to one. Here's mine - these trails are not intended for $200 bikes and only a fool would try to ride them with one. If you enjoy riding your $200 MTB in Santas Cruz, have at it, as nobody is going to begrudge you that! But the reality of todays MTB economy is that a Specialized S-Works (non e-mtb) will run you north of $11k, with the e-mtb version fetching north of $13k. So on a scale, not as big a jump as one would think there would be. E-MTB's are here to stay and their market share will only continue to grow. Kudo's to Santa Cruz for finally getting on board and to Greg Williams for being a conduit for that region. It is now on my to do list!
