Santa Cruz Reserve 30 Wheelset - Has the wheel lasted 3 seasons!?

UPDATE 10/12/2021 - I just relaced the back wheel AGAIN. In all honesty, I bet I could warranty the back rim now as there does appear to be some damage that is more than superficial. That said, the damage has been there most of 2021 and I have not been easy on the wheel. THIS IS INCREDIBLE.
I've put over 300 days on my Santa Cruz Reserve 30 wheelset and she's still kicking. Impressive durability from the top shelf offering from Santa Cruz. The question still beckons, is it worth it? I discuss this at length. The short answer is this...it depends. Spending $1600+ on a wheelset is a lofty ask, regardless of warranty.
Regardless, Santa Cruz deserves a big nod of approval and two thumbs up for creating a product that laughs in the face of the "throw away nature" of so many other mountain bike components and wheels of yesteryear.

Love the Reserve 30HDs on my Bronson. They were a £600 upgrade over stock when I bought it and they’re incredible. I started breaking spokes a few months in and not only did Reserve send me a new wheel within 24hrs but upgraded the hub to a Hydra free of charge. So impressed with both performance and warranty that I’ve specced the 30/31 E-MX wheelset on the Heckler that I’ve just ordered.

This has to be the most honest, and realistic, review on carbon hoops ever. I think I'm going to re visit this video every time I get the itch to blow cash on carbon wheels. Cheers.. sub'd

And you're absolutely right again, about the fact that if you're not a racer, then these wheels are an awesome luxurious choice! I'm in that category of "NON racer" , besides the lifetime warranty makes it hard to resist! 😋

Mate, this is a great channel. Love that you welded the rim back. I was a lifelong roadie and remember hammering mavic ksyriums back true with a rubber mallet and racing them again the following week.

I'm 155lbs, ride a Nukeproof Mega (160mm rear travel) and run 22psi in the rear. I have the HD version of the Reserve 30s and broke the rear wheel within 30 days of buying it on a non-burly section of trail (nothing like the Danny Mac video) I regularly ride. Note, I broke an ENVE AM30 on a burly section of the same trail. Reserve warrantied the rim in 2 weeks, but I had to pay my local bike shop to re-lace it. I love the wheels, but they aren't as durable as I had expected/hoped. I've beat the hell out of a set of Revel RW30s with no issue. Take it FWIW as anecdotes of one person, but the Revels are the only carbon wheels I've ridden in the last year that haven't broken.

Its clearly from a rock strike that somehow hit the rim near the spoke eyelets (very atypical). That said, the damage has been there most of 2021 and I have not been easy on the wheel. THIS IS INCREDIBLE.

Very refreshing review! I´m in the same market as you Jeff, and am wondering which durable aluminium wheelset you were referring to near the end? I like my Dt M1700 a lot on my Sentinel, but bend (not break) the rear rim rather frequently...

Carbon rims shine for xc and xc tires. Amazing. For trail its a small gain if that. For the big hits in nar alu rims all day. Wtb i35's all day for 299.00 for a wheelset. Wheelsets and cranks are in the same class. Go light or go strong. No in between. Cuz who wants ride drama....f that

Good stuff. I nnoticed you showing the Enduro specifically. Here we don't get the new Enduro at all. Still only the older one. So last week I bought a 2019 Enduro Elite. It's been a huge change from my 2018 Giant Trance. What's your opinion on the differences between the older X frame enduro and the new shape? I always search for these things but don't get any results.

The older Enduro is a great bike, absolutely nothing wrong with it. You'll have a blast for years to come on her. However, the new one is quiet possibly the most capable enduro bike ever built. I have few doubts its the fastest bike I've thrown a leg over. Is that "required"? Depends if you race, really. Both are very fun bikes!

I agree that there's nothing magical about carbon wheels. I have owned two sets and always go back to traditional alloy wheels.
