Arrived in Santa Cruz in 1975. The laid-back community, with artists, musicians and growers - and Steamer's Winter swells - became my reason for staying. My heart is still there... Thanks!

Surfing Northern California during the winter in 1970s wetsuits was brutal. Blue and paralysed hands and god awful wetsuit rashes comes to mind.

This is where I learned to surf - in the summer on 3’ shore break on an 8’ nerf board. I used to watch these scary monsters in the winter with awe and dread. Still not good enough to take on these behemoths (by my standards: an eternal kook).

I don't surf at all, but I love watching people take on these huge waves because it takes both experience and fearlessness. Respect!

Middle Peak is truly a freak of nature...NW swells can start bending and stacking on the reef a mile out to sea. The larger the swell the farther out to sea they start marching in. I loved watching them as l suited up. Once in the water there are only two things on your mind; get a wave and avoid getting cleaned-up.

When your out there surfing in the lineup, things move a little quicker. When you've got a double-overhead set crashing down on you the perspective moves a little quicker and less dreamy like. It's still fun and beautiful, but pretty scary.
