What a magnificent piece of engineering, today the trains look sleek etc but there is nothing that even approaches this beautiful engine on the rails today, the sound of the bell the whistle all make this an unforgettable sight and sound. I live in the UK we don't have these huge engines so to enjoy seeing this on KZbin is a brillliant and awesome sight.

Note at 6:16 how the car waiting at the gates suddenly backs up a bit upon hearing the steam whistle! As if: "what da hell is THAT???" LOL! What a beautiful loco! Congrats on the team that restored her and run her. Metrolink ridership would max out if you ran her once a month, just for fun. And love the glam shots of her at Union Station. What nostalgia. A perfect video.

I rode the 3751 back in '98 from L.A. to Williams.. we broke down on the Cajon pass {broken air line} & backed up the freights all the way back to L.A.! I don't think the union pacific was really happy about that...the train stopped for the night in needles & they bused us to the Ramada express in Laughlin, Nevada. next morning, continued to Williams, spent the night & rented a car & drove home! great trip!!!!

Hey John Carillo! I agree with You 110% Buddy! However, there is a very GOOD reason why a diesel electric runs with the steam locomotives. It was explained to me in Roseville, CA by an engineer who was running the UP 844 that came through for a visit. The diesel electric provides "dynamic braking" for the train. He told me to be confident that the steam locomotive does NOT need any help in the Sierra's (or elsewhere for that matter) to pull the train. Without dynamic braking, the labor/effort and parts to replace all the brake shoes on all the cars (and the locomotive) would be expensive not to mention VERY labor intensive &time consuming. While it does detract from the "moment", without it, we might not have the moment.

The reasons they have a diesel tide to these excursions is because steam engines don't usually have the ability to provide power to the coaches for the amenities and more importantly most if not all steam engines do not have and are not capable of having modern signaling equipment like diesels do. The diesel as previously mentioned is also there as a back up incase the steamer fails. but we all know that ain't never gonna happen !!
@manga12
@manga12 8 жыл бұрын
+prydonian460 the cars themselves have their own power units, or they do what 765 and the fort wayne historical rail and they have generator car, and as for 765 it has the equiptment to be able to run in the penn and eastern area it has special signaling in the cab, as for positive track control that might be another story, but the diesle is mainly for dynamic brakeing and incase of a brakedown, as for 765 in its last two years on excursions it ran solo and pulled the trains all by itself, mind you they would bring their diesle with them when they would ferry move so they could set cars up faster but on the runs it soloed and pulled pure steam. also 765 pulled 8 coal cars and its consist when they went to the east and went up ashbula hill unaided it had to pound it up and they thought it would stall but 765 made it with 20 plus cars, though the rails at one point were greesed and they had to get out and pour sand on the tracks to help get it going again but it made it my only regret is that ns canned the steam program for now, let us just hope the canadians dont eat up csx and ns, they are not doing soo hot these days with the lack of need for hauling coal and large amounts of products as of mid last year when buisness dropped off even the triple crown yard in fort wayne is all but shut down and it had a pretty good spreed across the old pique yard where the prr used to have its shops and terminal in fort wayne in its days.

Interesting for tourists and those who wish to see the city. There are lots of shots of the engine when so far away it is but a dopt. The diesel is there as a backup. The train has a generator car in the consist and the steam locomotive runs the brakes using its' own compressors. Usually, the diesel is running as dead weight.

Samuel Zelter I am a BNSF engineer and it is there because they don't want to worry about what to do if the steam engine dies (its old after all), and to not tie up a main line. It costs a lot of money to call out a second crew, and bring them out with another engine.
@TheSonic10160
@TheSonic10160 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know, that's what I said. It's there as a back up. If I was on that steam crew I'd be a bit insulted though. It's like the railroad doesn't trust the people who put years into restoring a locomotive as big as that and expect it to fail at any time.

Some nice footage,Snuffy...thanks for sharing.......it appears that the mainline is super close to residents....is this common out west?

It's pretty common here but not bad as some RR in south asia.

In New Zealand, mainlines run right through the heart of most towns.

Is that Union Pacific's steam garu Ed Dickens in the cab of 3751 at 11:52? Union Pacific is currently restoring UP "Big Boy" 4014 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I expect to see the grand old guy come whistling into Columbus,Nebraska in a couple of years. UP 3985 shows up ever so often but nothing like a Big Boy has ever stopped here since if have lived in the area.
