This English former "train spotter" in the heyday of steam loved the sight and sound of this magnificent loco in its run through beautiful scenery to the US West Coast. Congratulations to all concerned for letting us see this online.

Great photography and thank you for uploading it. After reading some of the comments I thought I would add some info since I was part of the pilot crew on board over the hill. We had 2 of the 3 diesels online. We needed them to get up the east side and used the dynamic brakes for the downhill. That train was approximately 1800 tons and 844 alone would have had a hard time of it. Let's face it, she's basically one of a kind and everything has to be hand made these days so there's no need to work her any harder than needed. Work the other motors so that the steam can make the show.

844 has control of the MU'd units in power only. We coordinated with another engineer in the lead diesel for dynamics.

Thank you for the great comments. I do find it disheartening that they used the diesel pushers/helpers. I do understand though. The UP 844 and SP 4449 did a double header through my little town of Tacoma WA. After that the SP 4449 did a lunch run here. Got some great pics of that. It was rumored that it ran out of water after climbing the hill behind my house. After that they used a diesel helper. I do not believe the rumors. I would put money on wheel spin. Great vid and thank you.

Most of the big Northern's like 844 and 4449 were somewhat slippery. SP installed boosters to help them start a heavy train but UP didn't believe in them. They were built to run fast and hot over flat (relatively speaking) ground. They were not mountain engines. Both of them were capable of 100 mph +. SP maintained speed restrictions over they're entire system well below that. However, there was a brief period when they lost the Sunset route due to washouts that forced them to reroute passenger trains over the Santa Fe across the desert. The Santa Fe engineers ran the GS class at over 100 mph and absolutely loved them.

I'll bet there was a huge sigh of relief when 844 started moving again after the derail. Otherwise, I enjoyed your video very much. There's something stately about these giants of steam as they belt across the countryside and the low angle shots were very effective. One thing struck me about your video - and it's the same over here. When you set up your camera for a special shot, someone with a pocket brownie walks right into frame with no care for anyone else. We have a word for these people in this country but KZbin won't let me print it!

They providing the power to coaches behind. When all railroads made the switch over to diesel-electric engines, they took off the steam generators on the coaches that were supplied with steam from the engine.. So the diesels are just their to heat the water, light the lights and heat the kitchen stoves used to supply the fabulous meals to the executives and crew traveling onboard.

Charles Damery 3 diesels just for HEP? those are not even passenger locomotives the diesels are there in case their is a problem with the 844. if it broke down, repairs would not be easy or quick. it would bog down the railroad until they could tow it away
@Chuck59ish8 жыл бұрын
Don't have to be, all diesel electric locomotives are just electrical generators anyway. There is no mechanical connection between the locomotive's engine and the drive train of the engine, unlike a steam engine.

What magnificent locomotive. We didn't have anything that big in Australia. Thanks for uploading. How much of the load are those diesels taking? It wasn't a very long train. Is it for safety regulations or something?
@1993Warbirds9 жыл бұрын
+darbz2k It's been a while since you've asked, but in essence, the diesels aren't "needed". UP-844 could handle the load up and down the Donner Pass. She's done it in the past. However, the Donner pass is still a mainline railroad and therefore, Railroad companies can't afford to have incidents happen that would block the pass for paying rail traffic. Even though 844 is still part of the UP's fleet, it is still technically a "guest" on their railway. The diesels are the that safeguard against that happening. There might be official regulations for it, I'm not sure. Oh and the diesels also provide electrical power to the passenger cars for lighting and air conditioning.
@singwith8 жыл бұрын
+darbz2k Thank you.
@singwith8 жыл бұрын
+1993Warbirds I just wish UP could do what NS is doing with 611.
@ericjamieson6 жыл бұрын
The diesels are mainly there for 1) dynamic braking - 844 is plenty powerful but it can't be guaranteed to stop inside the length of a modern signal block, and 2) head end power for the passenger cars. In steam days passenger cars had electrical generators, and were heated by steam from the locomotive, but these systems were obsolete long ago. That's why you hear one of them running when they go by. They could take over if they had to, but 844 is pretty reliable.

Great video, FEFs are really spectacular locos, would love to see 844 in person one day. Whats the gradient like up Donner Pass? Seemed to be making good pace, despite potential assistance by the diesels. To those who hate the diesels in the video, I could barely hear them, only when their were close up shots, even then it was mostly drowned out by 844, she still seemed to be sounding good, dunno what others are complaining about saying she was hardly working, sounded good to me

@davidhbingham68128 жыл бұрын
ZeldaTheSwordsman Only 2 turntable's are capable of turning Big Boy's & both are in same yard in Cheyenne..!
@ZeldaTheSwordsman8 жыл бұрын
David H Bingham That is only tangentially relevant to what I said, I was talking about building *new* turntables throughout the UP's territory to replace the ones ripped up post-dieselization, so that 844 at the least can just uncouple and go turn around on a table and then back down on the other end of the train.
@davidhbingham68128 жыл бұрын
Then what are you going to do with sharp turns, as that is what the problem is, due to the design of the serpentine trucks on the tenders used on 844, 3985 and 4014..? Guess one could redesign the truck's, if you could find a way to replace them on a historic piece of equipment designed 100 years ago..
