Santa Fe # 500 Pulls into Rusk Station at the Texas State Railroad

500 was an absolute beast of an engine. You can see how massive she was compared the other steam engines on the railroad. Her tender and cab were taller than the coaches. Unfortunately, her sheer size and weight is probably why it is unlikely we’ll ever see her run on the railroad for the foreseeable future. But you never know

Sure wish they'd return her back to life. She's the Queen of the fleet and the only real Passenger locomotive. Not to mention Santa fe really did service Texas almost everywhere.

@TheDeputation Just to clarify, the website for the TSRR states that # 500 is "Down for 1472". It's the inspection process that vintage steams must go through every 1,472 days of service, in which the entire steam locomotive is taken apart and refurbished. So yeah, taking apart a 100+ ton locomotive can take up some time. I'll be looking forward to seeing #500 on the rails again!

I predict that if she does come back, she’ll be given back her original identity of AT&SF 1316. But right now she’s still in pieces waiting for a decision to be made of what to do (either operational or cosmetic)

@@thomasweekley9209 Currently, 500 / 1316 has been cosmetically restored. The locomotive is in it’s original paint as 1316. It is unknown if it will be restored to operation status anytime soon or if ever.

@@chukowiley3823 I’ve seen her cosmetically restored. She’s a very beautiful engine. But it’s unlikely that she’ll be restored to working condition again because her boiler is in very bad condition.

@@thomasweekley9209 so I’ve heard. 1316 is one of the only locomotives to my knowledge that had to be taken apart so bad for an inspection. It’s honestly my favorite loco that TSRR has and it would be very cool (and unlikely) to see it in service.
