That is a beast! I can't imagine how hard the fireman had to work to keep up with the steam demand! Excellent model and video, subbed. Steam rules the rails!!

I recently finished painting one of these for a customer. What a beast. He just wanted a shelf model. I was impressed with the weight of the model.

Built right here at Topeka Shops. I've worked in the exact spot where it was built. Thinking there were 2 others, that class (please correct me if that's not right); dismal failures, soon cut up and rebuilt to original Mikados. Never built to haul trains; just used a short time as pushers, where they proved to be fuel inefficient and notorious wheelslippers, before they were cut up & rebuilt. Again, feel free to correct me if anything isn't right; but I think that's close, anyhow.

ATSF had 10 built in total and Virginian also has 10 built but the ATSFs versions had a poor track record but the Virginians had a greater success rate and worked up until the late 40s early 50s.

@@baileyconnors8988 Thanks. Didn't realize there were "that many" those things. They must've blown ton money on that experiment. I used to love hearing steam stories from the old men down there, some back to 30s, but none old enough there to remember those things when I worked there. The Santa Fe was never too fond of mallets after that. Did get some from N&W during wartime, though. Fix this again if any not accurate; thinkin' it is.

@@baileyconnors8988 Near same spot in W. Machine Shop those things were made, we had couple of humongous Bucyrus cranes that they converted to diesel, but I never worked on them, myself. Those didn't last too long either, before the company began farming out all their wreck work.

Great looking model! Just one thing: you have selected the incorrect sound for this particular locomotive. The sound you have is for a simple four cylinder articulated loco whereas this is a compound loco. (High pressure steam passes direct from rear cylinders to low pressure front cylinders.) The steam is only exhausted to the stack from the front (low pressure) cylinders and thus should only have four exhaust chuffs per wheel revolution on front set of drivers.
@TheSteamKing5 жыл бұрын
Much appreciated man, I was actually unsure about the chuffs. As un-prototypical as it is I just enjoy the sound of the double articulated chuffs. If I get the itch th up the realism I'll definitely switch it out. Thanks!

TheSteamKing like yourself I am a fan of the "simple articulated" soundtrack...the two sets of exhaust notes moving in and out of synch is addictive listening. (I have recently fitted this sound to a C&O H8 and a SP AC9) The sound from the compound Mallet is interesting: because the steam is used twice it doesn't have the same "bark" as a simple articulated, but rather a deeper, softer "whoosh"...well, certainly on the recording I have of a N&W Y6b but I am sure it would be similar on this beast of yours. (I bid on one of these on eBay a couple of years ago but lost out, it went for nearly US)$500
