Santa Lucia is a beloved Swedish Christmas tradition. Lucia is a Lady of Light, representing light within the darkness on the winter solstice. Many Swedes love to celebrate this day, lighting candles, and eating saffron buns. I love to create my own Lucia dress designs. I hope you enjoy learning about this wonderful holiday tradition!

Lucia was earlier Freja and called Frau Holle in Germany. We used to light all the candles to light up the darkness. Even the lussebullar is from celebrating Freja. We did it on the full moon closest to the winter solstice. The date is changed by the church and funny enough it correspond with celebrating the name Lucia, meaning the Bringer of light.

I made some St. Lucia buns, that made a good breakfast. They work good even if you have a summer Christmas instead of a winter one.

My family (Father, Grandfather and Grandmother) were Swedish. Both Grandparents were Swedishish Immigrants and came to Bishop Hill, Illinois the first communal Swedish Colony in America! Since my Father’s passing in 1996 I have been finding out more of my Swedish Heritage with my cousin in Sweden whom I have found over the Covid situation. I love hearing stories, listening to Swedish and seeing photos of my family there! I love your video and the music! Thank You!

Thank you so much. The dress you crafted is absolutely exquisite. I learned about Sainta Lucia Day a few years ago, as it is my birthday. I find it so interesting that on the old calendar it was the winter solstice, and now the 21st is, which is my brothers birthday. We always thought our heritage was German, but recently found a long lost cousin who informed us it is Swedish, and we still have relatives living on the same land from the 1500’s. I am very grateful for your explanation as I would love to add these traditions in our family. Have a blessed holiday!! Much love and light. My name is Christina, but the Apaches gave me the name “Woman with the sun around her head”.

Beautiful! I am glad you did this video, it's great to hear about this kind of tradition. In Czech republic the Christmas are mostly seen less religious and more like a popular holiday too. In old Czech tradition, Lucie was one of the important figures of Advent celebrations. She was likewise dressed in white, sometimes represented by a white masked figure with a long paper beak and equipped with white goose feathers which she used to check the households for dust and dirt - she checked if the household was properly cleaned for Christmas. There is also an old czech saying tied to the day of (saint) Lucie: "Svatá Lucie noci upije (ale dne nepřidá)." Meaning "saint Lucia sips from the night (but does not add to the day)" as it used to be just after the longest night of the year.

Love to learn a bit more of this tradition! Santa Lucia is not very celebrated in Portugal, at least not on my family's island. So, I always get curious this part of the year! Christmas is a very religious holiday for us until today ! Best season for me ♥️

Have no idea how I ended up here, especially when it's April and after Easter. 😂 But it was fun to see you play around with the traditional Lucia dress. Nice work with your dresses! 😃 One thing though, because I am trying very hard to kill this myth, the goats does probably not have anything to do with Thors goats. Very common thing that people talk about, but that is actually probably very wrong. There are extremely little proof for this. (I talk about this in a couple of my videos about Swedish traditions) It do has a non-Christian tradition from start, but seems to have much more to do with being a harvest goat. Goats have been a symbol for fertility all over Indo-Eurpoean tradtiotions for what seems to be thousands of years. Nice to see that you embrace our strange and crazy traditions that we have in Sweden. Hope you continue with this! 💖//The Swede that is also a history and folklore buff.

I understood some of the words in Swedish version! Have a nice Christmas/Yule/Joulu ❤️ We have some borrowed words from Swedish and one of those is Joulu. Sounds almost the same but is written differently. "Yulen är här" is propably one of the only Swedish songs I like to listen over and over during the holidays - as a suggestion 😉 Greetings from Finland 🇫🇮

Hi 👋 new viewer from 🇵🇭 Philippines, I'm Filipino and I already familiar the story of these beautiful Princess 👑of light 🕯️ question is .... I'm a guy, I once tried this wearing a wreath with electric candles, are those real candles in top of your head your wearing? Looks wonderful but quiet dangerous in case those candles are loose and there's a tendency it might fall. Be careful of wearing candles

One skandinavian tradition that americans take part of is the kissing under the mistle.. the God mother Frigg and wife to odin birthed a son beloved to all. He was named Balder and his mother went to evry animal and plant and ask them not to harm her son but she forgot one and the God of strife Loke found that out and made a Arrow of the mistle that murderd Balder. So after her misstake that she forgot the mistle she made a vow to kiss under it at her sons death day so she never forgets

We celebrate Lucia as swedish Americans as well. Lovely celebration. although I would not see it as "transcending" religion. Quite the opposite. I see these celebrations pointing to and making sense of themes that transcend human experience and draw us into greater understanding of the realities of God and the fall of man. Of Christ and Satan. Of good and evil. Light and darkness. The core realities truly have divine origin.
