Saint Lucia in reality is or were the most popular saint in medieval culture . Her legend about her eyes that was taken out because someone saw there lust , lead to a lot of symbols in architecture . The problems with eyes were very popular in medieval times . In gospel we read that if your eyes are clear - your soul is too . But she was the first saint that led to light being blind.

You are only partly right. In these regions pre christian era the winter solostice was anticipated and celebrated. With the longest night of the year passing the daylight periods grew longer. In anticipation the people celebrated the entity that was the harbinger of the coming light. This entity had different names in the different regions. In the baltic countries she was Kaleda. Pope Gregory advicated that the Christian monks sent to the pagan lands not try to supress the pagan celebration but apply Christian themes. So the sing sung by neopolitan boatmen was applied to the event St lucia the herald of light was celebrared with the ciming solostice.

@@catalina8601 the Julian calendar was used since the Roman empire before the birth of Christ it's origen is Julius Caeser hence (Julian) the western church how ever under Pope Gregory used the Gregorian but it didn't become officially used by western monarchies until the 1500 to 1600s were the Eastern Orthodox Church still uses the Julian and certain AnaBabtist groups like the Amish still use the Julian because their sects cut off from the outside world formed during the Reformation before the Gregorian switch hence what they call Old Christmas which is January 6 many in the early Church celebrated the Nativity with the Epiphany and circumcision of the Lord at the same time.

Maybe you can’t read properly: In Ancient Times- as in ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians- were light European people with blue eyes. That whole territory today on the map today, like Southern Europe as of today, only has people with swarthy features due to race-mixing and immigration in the Roman Empire (original jews, arabs, african people), or moors. And some people moved higher up, at this point. People move around, they’re not always static.

St. Lucia was from Siracusa, a town from Sicily. Why she became so popular in northern Europe, really I'm not able to understand. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 The same with Saint Nicolaus (become santa Claus). He was born in Patara and lived in Myra, turkey. The Saint Nikolaus (santa claus) is a rather new tradition in sweden, but we have older traditions and stories about Tomtar (Jultomten = santa claus, tomtar is plural) Tomtar is both good and bad, they protect your farm if you please them but if you anger them they spread diseases, they are a part of our folklore, and historically its the julbock (christmas goat) that dilevered christmas presents in sweden, and swedish speaking parts of Finland, and I think norway aswell. And lucia is origenaly from the catholic faith but when we became protestants around year 1500 saints somewhat lost its meanings and during thw middleage the Lucia day was the start of the winter fast, and sense arleast 1764 it started to turn in too what it is today, And why should we keep to Chatolic practises when we arn't Chatolic.

OH and and the nordic Jultomten do not have raindeers and elvs, he got tomtenissar i cant translate that becuse when I look it up it translate wrongly becuse its not a elf, winter solstice have been a celebrations in the North far longer then christianity has been here, so its not only based to christian values its a mix of pagan, christian and modern Consumerism. And the santa claus your talking about whit raindeers elfs and a sleigh is not based of nordic ideas came to us from Netherlands and Germany, and later on USA hade a turn at it whit Consumerism and Coca Cola made it to what it is today in most western society.
