Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. I saw Cheyenne and was like “OMG I recognize her!” Lol we were classmates a few times. I haven’t had Bill Vicars as a teacher yet but he seems pretty cool. I have had his wife as my professor twice and she’s super cool. Majoring in ASL and Deaf Studies was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. All my professors have been awesome and I don’t know why but I just feel at home during classes and stuff. I’ve made so many friends I wouldn’t have made otherwise. Happy (late) holidays everyone!

Dr. Vicars, Santa LOVES your Santa’s ASL video. You see, he had a wonderful encounter with a deaf child that has now changed his life. He quickly learned from the child’s mother how to say, “I love you!” The little girls’ eyes lit-up brighter then Rudolf’s nose. That very moment, he realized that he had to be a better Santa. Flash forward to two weeks ago. Santa finally remembered the wonderful thought of his earlier meeting. So, he now takes a few hours a day to learn ASL. Tonight, Santa found “your” Santa video on KZbin. Oh, my goodness, you have out given Santa! Thank you, Doctor Vicars. You are now and forever, the “CHIEF ELF” here at the North Pole. Drop by anytime. We have wonderful snow cone treats every summer. Santa, Mrs. Claus and all the Elves say, "THANK YOU!" (dominant hand from mouth to other hand) He he Ho!

Merry Christmas to you Santa. Thanks for spreading joy and happiness to others.
@sign-language5 жыл бұрын
Tip: The sign THANK-you works best without a non-dominant hand. Just move the dominant flat-hand from (somewhat near) the mouth toward the person being thanked. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIiTc3d8is-mfZI Why just use the dominant hand and not both hands? Meaning why not move the dominant hand down to the non-dominant hand? Because that version tends to be considered as a version of "GOOD."

Hello 👋🏽 Dr. Vicars, I have been a follower for a little while now, and I am so thankful for your KZbin videos, they are so descriptive, very educational, and I’m amazed of how many words and phrases I have been able to pick up myself from just your videos! I like how each lesson has a theme. Since talking about themes. I was wondering. How about a back to school theme/ or graduation theme ? Or Maybe Christmas Songs? Thanks again for the amazing videos.

Even just watching a few minutes of this, it reminded me of when i got to take 1 ASL class in college. Though i passed, i didn't get to really retain much of it, though i did want to and go again. Your friendly nature is helpful to this learning, though i will say some of the signs are updated/different from when i got to take the class back in... 2006-2007? Yet watching this also reminded me of the difficulties, such as keeping up with the wording/ stories. I hope your doing well, and perhaps i may try to pick some of this up again.

Hi, Dr. Vicars. Thanks for the Christmas ASL video! I'm a professional Santa, too, and--by chance--had a virtual call last season with a special needs girl who knew sign. So I pulled up some from past ASL training (conversational, not fluent). Next week, I'll be the virtual ASL Santa and this video is EXACTLY what I was looking for to brush up on Christmas specificities! It's perfect. And the interactions between you and Cheyenne --to which I signed along-- were so natural, that at one point I literally felt myself in the room with the two of you, because your reactions corresponded uncannily to my joint participation. Successes, errors, and all. At moments, it was like I was there with you. God bless you, sir!

Letting you know I've seen your comment. I always welcome people to share with me any signs or versions of signs that they feel are not accurate and any supporting information they might have. Language evolves over time and no one instructor has a lock on every sign, every regional variation, and every protologism (newly coined but not yet spread) or neologism (starting to spread). I do try though (ha!). It is an impossible task but at least I enjoy rolling the stone up the mountain. The nice thing for students is that they are no longer at the mercy of a local instructor (who may or may not be using outdated signs or misusing regional variants, etc.) and can look up various signs from half a dozen different skilled signers in moments from any internet connection with a screen. For those reading this comment who are curious about my curriculum development process, see: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/teachingasl/teachingasl-bill.htm For tips on how to use ASL University to learn sign language for free, see below: 1. Just a quick question: is the sign shown here for NO BIGGIE the same sign as the one for FURNITURE ? Or are they slightly different? I'm sure you could tell what someone meant based in context, but I'm just curious! Edit: My apologies! Time stamp 36:01
@sign-language4 жыл бұрын
Whenever asking about signs in a video always include a timecode to make it easy for other commenters to see the exact sign to which you are referring. FURNITURE is more of a stiff, controlled side to side movement (only moving an inch or two). See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3iXi4GFjruNhJY NO-big-deal (nothing to it) also moves side to side but incorporates a bit of a wiggly / pivoting movement along with the side to side movement. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6vdhpysm5p2pZY

Great thanks! When we are signing yes or no questions, do we keep the eyebrows raised throughout the questions?
@sign-language Жыл бұрын
If it is a short question then, sure, you can keep your brows raised -- but if it is more than two or three signs we tend to raise the brows more toward the end. Compare the brow raise to the raising or modulating of your voice when you ask a question in English. For very short questions you might use a question tone during the whole sentence but during longer questions you would tend to limit the question tone to be just long enough to help clarify that you are asking a question instead of making a statement.
