Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

When you're learning sign it doesn't help for the explanation to be in sign or talk to the student in sign while trying to teach sign. It's counter intuitive.
@sign-language

Indeed. Weird eh? I think what makes it work is the combination of just enough English scaffolding via the Powerpoints to give people enough of a clue to follow along if they choose to. Sure, people have to get comfortable with not catching every single concept. On the other hand, this approach is great for developing inductive reasoning as well as prediction and decoding skills -- which transfer "very" nicely to the real world later on.

CJ looked so nervous... Poor guy. You're amazing CJ, this comes from someone who fears doing presentations in front of class (and yes, even speaking in class). I read the reason why. You can do it CJ! 👍✨ And yes, I know that I'm late to this vid, but oh well. A little bit of encouragement never hurt anyone! Stay awesome everyone and have a nice day! 😁✨

Letting you know -- I have a lot of respect for CJ. When I asked for volunteers that day everyone else sat there on their rear ends looking like sheep. CJ raised his hand and came to the front.

at 6:58 Dr. Bill begins teaching about the incorporated sign phrase "you MEET that-person". After a few examples, he tells us that you can use your dominant or non-dominant hand for "YOU" depending on where the other person is. Good to know!

I am glad you showed about not using i for the sign for I. When I learned back in the 80s I was taught that. Now that I am interpreting at church, I don't always use that but sometimes I do. The deaf man there is great and patient with me. lol He also teaches ASL in our school as a second language. Thanks so much for these videos. I try to watch one every Tuesday.

Thank you for these videos. They are very useful when one is trying to learn ASL on their own. I am confused by one part though. What is the difference between theirs and theirs (group pronoun)? Is it general vs a specific gathering of people? 5:35 - 5:54
@sign-language
@sign-language 5 жыл бұрын
If you mean "their or theirs" as in characteristic of a specific group that has been identified, you are referring to ONE group and thus there is no need to "sweep" the palm.

I am new to sign language. Just wondering why the other people in the room giggled when the student signed "meet" incorrectly. What did the student actually sign? Thanks in advance.
@sign-language

Lisa, when asking about specific examples, please always include the specific time code of the sign you have a question about so I don't have to watch large sections of a video to find the specific example you would like clarified. Thanks.

@@sign-language Thank you for replying. The section in question starts at about 6:44 and the student makes the error at 6:48. It sounds like there are people in the background that stifle a giggle. :) As a true novice I've made a few mistakes, mixing up signs, or making a small error with orientation or what-have-you, and sometimes the error can be quite funny. So I just wondered if that were the case here. Thanks in advance.

If the giggle started when he first did the sign then they were probably amused by the way he touched the tips together which made it appear as if two people were "kissing" each other. If the giggles started when I corrected his signs then they probably thought it was amusing how I personally took hold of his hands and moved them into the right position. Note: He was not signing "two people kissing each other." It would take a LOT of context in order to come to that conclusion. For more signs related to "kissing" see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioWTh6ajiMqoe9k And see: kzbin.info/door/Zy9xs6Tn9vWqN_5l0EEIZAsearch?query=kiss

@@sign-language Oh, I get it now. Yes, it seemed the onlookers were giggling at the student signing "kiss" instead of "meet". You're a great teacher. I appreciate your videos very much.

I wanna know what "it" is in "it'll be ok" for example
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
The general sign for "it" is done by simply pointing at the object to which you are referring. If the object, person, or location to which you are referring is present (there in your immediate environment), you can just "point" at him or her. If the referent isn't around you can just point off to your dominant side. You can also point toward where something was. For example, suppose a person was sitting in a certain chair and but recently got up and left, you can point at the empty chair to refer to that person. Sometimes we fingerspell "it" as in "do it."
