Michael Shrieve!!! He was the BEST drummer I ever heard live. Talented with such snap, riffs his timing is perfection!

I knew Mike back when we were going to high school together he was a year or two ahead of me and I remember him saying would you like to go back east to concert it's called Woodstock and I remember remember my reply I'd love to but my father would have a fit I still have to finish school I may have missed Woodstock but I still have those great memories of Mike and I skateboard and playing drums together hanging out listening to music going to concerts in San Francisco very special time for me

Wow! What an upload! The Santana band was at its best when Shrieve was the drummer and a driving influence in its jazz influences and recordings. Thanks for putting this on KZbin for the world to enjoy. Larry, Taiwan

Carlos doesn't even know it's Shrieve...not Shrieves and he was on the first six albums...not three.

That's surprising to me. Did all those drugs blunt his memory? He still performs and writes music. Not like he's senile or anything. I think LSD can distort your memory, like light through water.

This comment is for the musicians out there. Don't you agree with me that Carlos's playing is brilliant here in this video, but ( I am absolutely SHOCKED) ... HIS timing is off when he is soloing? The band is trying so hard to help him and back him up, but particularly on Black Magic Woman and on Oye Coma Va, it sounds like he is putting too much in at the end of phases and misses the downbeat. I don't know... maybe it is my computer, but as a bass player I practice with a metronome when I hear it, and I think I know good timing. Maybe he was flashing back too much. LOL. Also maybe the monitors were not working or adjusted rightly. They are spread out on that big, big stage.

+beatit49 I've noticed Santana often seems to be trying to cram as many notes as he can into every lick.. whereas he was a lot more laid back in the 60s/70s. Maybe that's part of what you're hearing.

+beatit49 sounds ok to me,Carlos syncopates a lot, also improvises ,he rarely plays the same as the original these days, probably due to age , most likely cant remember ! hes not so quick as he was,you cant expect it, but the timing is ok. its not easy to hear what you are doing in the open either, one must allow.
