The drummer, Michael Shrieve just turned 20. They picked him up at a jam session. He's now listed as one of Rolling Stones magazine's top 100 most influential drummers. The keyboardist was Greg Rollie and he went on to help found the band Journey with Steve Perry. They weren't scheduled to play till that night so when offered some drugs by Jerry Garcia from The Grateful Dead, they took them. Then they got called to the stage early and made magic while tripping! Carlos' guitar became a writhing snake in his hands so that's why he was twisting around so much.

Sue, with all due respect, Michael Shrieve was only 18. He graduated from Serra High in 1969. I graduated in 1971 and had the pleasure to listen to him bang on them drums during Senior appreciation day. The rumors of him joining Santana was wild. Personally, I hate this cut of Soul Sacrifice as it edited out almost all of his amazing drumming solo. Sad, very sad 😢

I was almost 17 when I was at Woodstock. Today, so many of my memories fade away...but memories f that weekend never fade, somehow. So much great music, but for me Santana was the highlight, They played for more than an hour...nobody had ever heard them before...it was all new & incredible. I know you listen to only single songs here, but if you can...listen to that entire first album (titled simply "Santana"). To this day, one of my favorites.

The album cover is simply black-and-white, with an intricate black-ink artwork. A very excellent first album for a San Francisco-based band, but if I had a choice, I'd always go with their 2nd one, "Abraxas."

this. This! THIS!!! was a seminal moment in America...when an unknown band from the Bay area of California exploded onto the stage in front of a half-million people during a fraught period of American history in a moment of music, peace, and love. More, the drummer who crushed this performance was Michael Shrieve, just turned 20 years old the month before. Soul Sacrifice is right...he poured everything into this performance. Nothing short of an amazing 12 minute moment in history.

They were supposed to go on later in the show. So Gerry Garcia gave them some acid. so they took it then the show schedule changed and they were called on to the stage an hour or so later and the acid kicked in when they were on stage. Carlos said his guitar turned into a snake while doing his solo. there are couple times where you see him try to readjust the neck of his guitar , cus the snake was trying to wriggle out of his hand.

This was like no other band at the time and created a sensation, obviously. I was just starting college in Florida. We had a design team competition and I was assigned to a group of 4 Cuban students. They were shocked that I had never heard of Santana. They played the first Santana album and I was hooked. Still one of my favorite bands to this day. They also exposed me to avocados, which I quickly learned to LOVE. Santana played continuously while we worked. Maybe after you hear them for a few times you will sort out the rhythms and get comfortable. Latin jazz and rock are powerful genres and fit the Woodstock vibe so well at the time. It also was great with pig roasts at the beach! Loud, solid, rock with a beat; you could not stand still. Santana was king. Prog and Jazz/fusion shortly followed. Freedom was most important.....but drugs certainly played a part.

I'm surprised. How is it possible to not have a connection with this performance? Such a vibrant, energetic and connecting moment in time! Therefore she couldn't "connect"... For me that is intellectual arrogance... Whatever the reason being for this magical performance, being drugs or not, it is just a legendary musical accomplishment.

To this day there is a sting in my heart because I couldn't attend this concert (by the way, I was 9 years old and lived in Germany, no chance). I saw the movie a year later. A third-rate copy in a second-rate movie theater that totally blew me away. There was no music like that in Germany. Or very rarely. And to this day, I would have loved to have been there. At some point, I learned the whole story of "Woodstock". The movie glorified the whole thing. Today I have to say that I would have loved to have heard and seen the music live. But not under the circumstances that prevailed in the square. The audience was fantastic, but - as so often - the organizers were completely overwhelmed. And then someone ran away with the cash register. The sun rose for "Santana" here. An incredible, always topical song. Fits the zeitgeist of the time: "Sex and Drugs and Rock'n Roll"! 🎸🎶💖☯☮

To do this you simply had to move, even learn to dance. Back then I didn't even know how to spell hippie and joint. The debut was still an insider tip; At the latest with the follow-up album Abraxas, everyone interested in music knew Santana; the single Samba Pa Ti was constantly playing on the radio.

If Santana seems too out of control to let you feel comfortable, I guess that is why you have not listened to the progressive rock band Genesis from the '70s yet. They put together beautiful music that could still unnerve you. We are not talking about 'Invisible Touch' 1987, but something like 'Watcher in the Skies' or 'The Cinema Show' from 1971 with Peter Gabriel singing! 'Dance on a Volcano' 1976 would definitely be too hot to handle with Phil Collins singing lead.

Woodstock was amazing. They planned and calculated approximately 50,000 people would attend. Imagine the shock when over 400,000 showed up! The roads were all blocked for miles around, they didn't have enough food or places to sleep. It rained almost every day. Some guys managed to get truckloads of watermelons in to feed people and got rich off them. Not a single instance of violence which would be impossible today. I believe there was 1 death when a guy fell off the speaker towers, plus a birth or 2 happened! Trance music to me is more like Pink Floyd or Moody Blues. I would listen to them but not often. I preferred this with jamming guitars and drums, music like The Doors, Jethro Tull, Zeppelin, Janis, Jimi Hendrix. I was 15 when Woodstock happened, never even thought about going, but I did go to Michigan's Woodstock, called Goose Lake in Jackson, MI and the 1970 Monterey Pop Fest in CA. in hopes of seeing Janis but she died 2 weeks before that festival happened.
