Santanyí is a truly amazing town. Its history, dominated by pirate attacks, the tourism of the present, have made it what it is today.
A place open to the future
Santanyí is a unique town located on the south of the island. Precisely because of where it is, close to the small island of Cabrera, Santanyí has a history closely linked to pirate attacks, which often used Cabrera as the centre headquarters. These attacks, which did not cease until the 18th century, are the reason why the town’s architecture is filled with fortified buildings which nowadays are of great interest to tourists.Santanyí comes from the Latin, ‘Sancti Agnini’ (holy lamb) and was founded by King Jaume II in 1300. Since then, Santanyí has changed a lot. Population growth and tourism have made it what it is today: a combination of small villages that are proof of its growth and evolution: La Costa, s’Alqueria Blanca, Cala Santanyí, Calonge, es Llombards, Son Mòger, Cala Figuera, Portopetro, Cala d’Or and Es Cap des Moro.As well as archaeological sites situated near the Son Danús Vell farm or the Punta des Baus, that show that there was pre-roman activity in Santanyí, this beautiful town has some more surprises in store.Its church is home to one of the most spectacular instruments studied on the island; a unique organ built in 1762 which is simply a must for those who are fans of historical organs. Another curious fact is that Santanyí is said to have the best stone in Mallorca. Even the Castel Nuovo in Naples was built with this stone. But Santanyí is not all history. Today it is a place filled with life and plans to do with your loved ones. You can enjoy a stroll around the pedestrian area where you can find shops and bars, or even home-made ice cream made in Bon Gelat. Another of the local delicacies is the Grimalt cheese, truly exquisite and a souvenir favourite for those who visit us.
