When I was very young in Poland we had an old record player with the radio and one record, Gold and Silver waltz. When nobody was around, i played the record multiple times waltzing around the table, this waltz made me fall in love with music of Lehar, Strauss family and many other waltz composers

To me this is the greatest of F. Lehar compositions. Growing up listening to an old 33rpm record with a collection of waltzes conducted by Maestro George Melachrino, this is the one I never had enough of. I don't want to sound pretentious but I come to the sad conclusion that it sounds as if nowadays one needs to have a certain mood or "spiritual or artistic elevation" to appreciate this wonderful music, what wasn't supposed at all when it was composed, it was just intendent to be a joyful kind of music with melodies that were to be easily kept in our ears.

Someone (Mario Franco) remarked 'what a lame audience'. I took some German friends to The Last Night of the Proms at the Cape Town City Hall last year and they couldn't believe the audience participation. Detlev remarked, nothing like that at home. Reminds me of dancing at a company Christmas party many years ago - the musicians took a break from the run-of-the-mill stuff and played a set of waltzes: The Skaters Waltz, Gold and Silver, and The Blue Danube. My partner and I managed to get through all three. (though the last was pretty crowded with all but three of the ~250 attendees on the floor.......
