A Hungry Voyager

4 жыл бұрын

Today we head over to the largest town on Lake Atitlan, Santiago Atitlan. It's a short 20-minute boat ride around the coast where we learn about Guatemala's bloody civil war and meet a local celebrity! Today we jump on a Tuk Tuk Tour to explore this beautiful town.
Before setting off for Santiago, we had a couple of things in mind that we wanted to visit, one of them was Maximón, the wooden effigy of a man worshipped by local people that apparently drinks alcohol and smokes. This all sounded very mysterious and from our research, we realised that we would need a local guide to take us to Maximón. After that our plan was to explore Santiago on foot as it came. As it turned out we got the most amazing tour guide when we arrived at the port who took us around Santiago and taught us the history of the town. He also introduced us to a lovely 77 year old lady called Concepción Ramírez who has appeared on the Guatemalan 25 cent coin since 1959.
Enjoy our latest Guatemala Travel Vlog!

Maximón is an interesting figure - never quite seen anything like it. Can't believe that two people have a fulltime job of just guarding him - I guess they get to share in the alcohol and tobacco offerings? 😉 What a diverse place Santiago is. I really like random experiences - Concepción is one cool lady! 😀 Oh mannn, that food at the end looks AMAZING. I love it when you get lots of different things in a meal. YUMMMM

What an interesting tradition they have with wooden statue. The smoking, drinking statue! It is amazing all the different things we can witness when travelling to exotic places! Ahh, guacamole! We are in Mexico now and the avocados are to die for! What do you guys film on? A GoPro? If so maybe turn down the sharpness to medium or low. We had it set on high on ours and it looks much better on medium or low. Thanks for sharing guys!

Yes the fruit and veg here is all sooo fresh! It's always a pleasure to eat out here! We are using a GoPro Hero 7 Black. We found that the Go pro while stable and high quality, leaves the image quite grey and dull so we colour grade during editing to make them more vibrant! Possibly too vibrant at times! Thanks for the tip though will check it out! :)

Hello. As someone who constantly goes to Santiago from the US, Machimon is a legit witch. When you hear about witchcraft and witch doctors, it's actually legit (with curses and everything). Santiago Atitlan is also home to the biggest Christian ministry in the world, Palabra Miel. The "headquarters" is right there. You actually drove by it in your video. When you go up the hill in the TukTuk, the first right and the church is there. Fyi.

Is so beautiful and rich the United Kingdom of Guatemala established since 1609 and that extends from El Soconusco (today Chiapas) to part of Panama. Guatemala is 12th producer of silver in the world and 20th producer of gold besides having massive reserves of nickel, jade and so many other natural resources too bad for almost a century big foreign multinational corporations have been taking almost everything. The Malvinas belong to Argentina, The Esequibo belongs to Venezuela and Belice belongs to Guatemala. God bless

I know exactly whats happenning in Santiago. In the 70s before the war broke out real bad. Panajachel was the hometown of most of the hippie community. We hang along pretty well for years that Pana got the name of gringotenango, but one night, many of the hippies decided to have a big party at the public beach. I guess they had way to muxh booze and weed that the party ended up in a big orgy at the public beach. The authorities in Pana felt very offended by that action, that they called the military base in Quiche. So the army came and made all hippies leave town. I was like 9 years old, and remember seeing all hippies vans leaving town. A week after that happen, we went visiting my grand parents in Santiago. When we got there, my grandma told us, out of nowhere we are now full of hippies all over town. They stayed in Santiago until the war broke out real bad. Them all left. After the war San Pedro, San Marcos got more popular, so every turist go to those towns.

That is extremely interesting.Thank you for your comment. Our knowledge of the history of this area is limited, we knew that there was some kind of hippy vibe around the lake and have seen that in a lot of the towns, there is Yoga and wellbeing events all over. We didn't see this in Santiago, it felt a lot more authentic than say San Pedro and we really enjoyed that. Thanks again for your insight and information on the recent history of the area.
