That would have devalued the championship. Look at what happened when Jinder Mahal was champion. He was the worst world champion of the last 30 years. He nearly killed Smackdown. There’s a reason why comedy guys don’t win the world title: if you make the joke guy the top champion, you make the top title a joke. If the title is a joke, then the company is a joke. That’s why you have serious stars hold the top title, it’s better marketing. Santino had a nice little career, a lot better than most in the midcard. But he was never meant for bigger things.

Santino was nonstop funny. Sure, that’s entertaining to fill a few minutes of the card, but when it’s time to put him in the ring against a killer like Randy Orton or a monster like Mark Henry or Brock Lesnar, how is anyone supposed to take that seriously? Why would mass numbers of fans buy a PPV for that? They wouldn’t. Serious fans and even casual fans, who I don’t like, would look at this guy and go “Really? THAT’S the guy who has the belt? 🫤” When that happens, buyrates drop, ticket sales drop, interest drops, it’s just not going to work. You don’t book a title run to please a vocal minority or a crowd that gets hot on one B-level PPV; you book for what’s best longterm.

And to clarify, I’m not saying guys in the midcard can’t eventually be world champions. Plenty of stars started in the midcard who became legendary champions-Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Kurt Angle, CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, Daniel Bryan, etc. But they had the ability to be more than just in the middle of the card. They showed flashes of being main event players. That wasn’t Santino. He was never meant for that. He went 100 percent in on the comedy and never got serious or had a great classic match with someone before this. He wasn’t ready to be a world champion and all the responsibilities that come with it. He wasn’t going to be a guy who can move ratings and sell merch and sell tickets. Or even be a believable opponent for the guy who could do those things. He is a midcarder. He’s “mid”. Always was, always was meant to be.
