Great vid and info! I recently purchased a used Pac-Man cabinet at a flea market. The cabinet looks great, but the guy told me the joystick just doesn't work right. He wanted $100 but took $75. I get it home and take it apart and instantly saw something was up. All the joystick wires were spliced and bare with no electrical tape covering them Then i look closer, it had Sanwa stamped on the bottom of the gate. And sure enough the gate was set for 8 way instead of 4. So i straightened it all out and it now works great! Apparently someone had attempted to change the joystick and had no clue what they were doing, then gave up and decided to sell it.

Would you say octagon is better than square for Pac-Man? Square is a nightmare, and I'm trying to figure out a half-decent gate for a multicade. I figured Octo wouldn't be so bad as at least the stick can rest where it's supposed to.

Regarding the square vs diamond, square has been working good for most games, except fighting games like SFII seem impossible. Is octagon good both for fighting games and for all the other games that work good with square?
@diyretroarcade Жыл бұрын
octagon is the "happy medium" between 4 and 8 way games. It works best with both style games.

Pro tip, just cut off only one end of the gate as the other 3 would lift of easily and you can still re-use the gate, you do not need to cut off all 4 corners and destroy the gate.

Useful video and subbed! Are Sanwa mounting plates interchangeable with JLF and JLW sticks? The reason is because I have an older JLW stick and I would like to upgrade to the JLF v2 silent but the mounting plate holes differ which may mean that I may not be able to upgrade without replacing the control panel assembly.

while it can be rotated but its still 4way, just in diagonal or straight.
@Retro65023 жыл бұрын
No - When the gate is lined up as a square with the joystick, all 8 positions can be activated (up, up/right, right, down/right, down, down/left, left, up/left). When it's rotated 45 degrees (diamond) the stick can't move far enough in the diagonal directions to activate the switches. It will only register up, right, down, left in that configuration.
@retromister813 жыл бұрын
@@Retro6502 no, just check out the real Octagonal gate. You have here only 4 indentations. So rotating it just give you better diagonal or straight control but not both.
@Retro65023 жыл бұрын
@@retromister81 An octagonal gate has nothing to do with it. This is a square gate. Turning it 45 degrees relative to the switches locks out the diagonals.
